So last year there were two music based challenges and the idea has been percolating in the back of my brain. Last week I came up with a very sweet idea. Only to find that the organizers of both of those challenges have left Lit.
So I'm wondering if there is sufficient interest, I may approach Laurel about starting a new one. It would be similar to the Karaoke Challenge I think. I realize there are 14 challenges this year and 6 contests, so I'm just gauging interest. I will still be doing the story even if there isn't a challenge.

I’d be for it. There are still a few Willie Nelson tunes which are asking for a story to be written.

In general I believe there are too many challenges and one way to deal with them is to have each one go every other year. You might propose this when you contact Laurel.

I would be interested. I can't guarantee i will finish in time, but I would give it a shot. I have a song in mind that I've been constructing a story around for almost 10 years. This would give me the impetus to finally sit down and write it. Or write most of it.

What’s the challenge? To write a story based on a song? Or to sing? Both?

I've written a few stories which referenced songs at the beginning and end with which to frame the story plot. In the prologue and end of "Abuse Addict", I include some lines from the 1972 Bill Wither's song "Use Me," because the story is about a guy who recognizes his GF is abusing him and he's using her.

But in my story "Break the Bitch, Drive Her Crazy" (a BTB story in Loving Wives) the MC literally uses the 1966 song by Napoleon XIV "They're Coming to Take Me Away" as a late-night background song in his ex-wife's house to help drive her crazy.

So, what would the challenge entail? Write the story around the lyrics? Or make use of music within the story?

I'd be willing to give it a try. I already have a story that's based on a Christmas song, so why not?

I think perhaps 'challenge events' should be phased out in favor of just making the themes quasi-categories identified by a relevant tag. Or the site could co-opt the code from the series manager to let authors add contributions to a 'Pandemonium Collection' or 'Karaoke' or 'Mickey Spillane' and whatever else there is. The contests being time-sensitive is sensible since they're seasonal, but most of the challenges don't need to occur at any particular time to remain on theme.

Put this one together in my head while I was outside doing some things. Typing out 1,100 words only took an hour or so. Uses two song titles, a few story ideas threads, an AH thread and a TV show.

Probably needs a few tweaks though and maybe a few fill in words and scenes.

When's Go Time?

As someone who is currently writing a story using the title of a Madonna song, I would absolutely love this!

A little filler gets it closer to 1,400.

Not really interested in a karaoke thing or even a story based on a song or song title, but I often have musical ideas and currently have a musical duet project in my to do list.

Thanks to everyone for their input. I'll look into both of the old challenges come up with a something, attempt contact with the other organizers and then chat with Laurel. I'll let her decide when it would fit best in next year's schedule.

I let both know you are trying to contact them about this and sent you a PM on how best to reach out to them. I'm friends with both.

Thanks very much. I sent them a DM. I'm just making sure they have no intention on running theirs again, so we don't have overlapping interests..
Next year?
Yes.

I think I will keep everything very simple. Any story that is inspired by music and/or musicians. That will allow any story that would have fit into either of the previous challenges, Heart/Beats or Karaoke Challenge.

If anyone has any input, I'm all eyes.

After looking at this years challenge list, the only month not really covered by other overlapping challenges is November. So I think I'm going to shoot for that, for next year.

Song titles are great inspiration. Last year I published a story with the title of the Three Dog Night song Mama Told Me Not To Come. It was too good to resist. I'm still working on a story entitled Don't Stand So Close To Me, which a story that's based on the song.
