You also need to explain why both mom and son are in the backseat in the first place. Who’s in the passenger seat? If it’s another person, then it makes the whole thing even more implausible since there would be another angle to view the shenanigans from.

In my story, Dad is driving, the daughter, who is being taken to start her freshman year of college, is in the passenger seat, Mom and Son are in the back, and the luggage is piled high in the backseat partly blocking the view between the seats. I concede there are improbabilities involved, but having read enough of mom-son stories and having a pretty good sense of the mood of most of the readers I thought it wouldn't matter too much.

I read one of those where it was more of a van type thing. The middle was full of luggage and the two were in a back seat facing rearwards, looking out the back window.

Here's the next phase in this sub-genre's development: The car is self-driving. The only occupants are Mom and Son, with her on his lap in the back seat. They will nonetheless agree/insist afterward that these things just happen.

I've written two stories where this happened.

My first was set on a loveseat while they were watching TV. The loutish dad spilled beer on the loveseat leaving nowhere for mom to sit but on son's lap.

In the second they sat in the backseat of the car on a long trip and the luggage was pressing into her side so she sat on son's lap to get comfortable.

Don't scoff. These are important artistic choices.

This might just be me, or others could also see it this way, but at this point when I see a lap story, I just think there's nothing behind the story other than number chasing.
