What exactly do the mods do on the other boards? How do they decide what posts to remove? How do they deal with obnoxious posters? Would having them on the GB really make a difference?

On the other boards, we remove SPAM and posts in violation of the Forum Guidelines, namely posts that include personal data and threats.

In forums where it is relevant, we may stick threads at the top of the forum with pertinent information and announcements, but I don't see any reason for that in the General Board.

Being obnoxious is not against the rules, and the moderators aren't anyone's parents.

If some moderators were "corrupted" by their "power", as it's been said, all you had to do was report them to Laurel. The moderator are as much subject to the rules as anyone else, or more.

I don't think we need Mod's here. Just more people actually reporting posts that need to be.

Therein lies the problem though. I know how many complaints I get daily, for 2 forums, probably 10% are legit. I can only imagine how many go to Laurel/Manu from this forum and how many they have to wade through DAILY.

Maybe a good idea to have mods for ONLY that? To sort through the complaints?

No.

What point would a moderator serve on the GB?

I don't see how having a GB moderator would have made any substantive change in either the Obliterator or the KS/BS situations.

As a GLBT Moderator, almost all I ever do is move off topic threads to the appropriate venue (usually the GLBT Personals). Since, by definition, nothing is off topic on the GB, that role would not exist here.

As for rules violations, every poster can click the "Report to moderator button". On the other boards, that sends a notice to the appropriate Mods, but since there are no Mods here, it goes directly to Laurel. Adding a level of Moderators might actually slow down, rather than expidite dealing with any situation.

*wheew* I'm good to go, then.

The GB is pretty damn unique here on Lit, and quite interesting once I had a look at it... the fact that ANYONE can basically say ANYTHING they like (within the limits, like no personal info, no spamming and so on, I'm guessing) is the best thing about this place!

Its great to read what so many different people, from diverse backgrounds, think of interesting topics of discussion... none of the general craziness of the forum should be moderated in any way.

The things that SHOULD be moderated are the personal info and such that could have a direct impact on other user's lives.... and spam, cause I fuckin HATE spamming, its the scourge of the goddamn Net!

For quicker removal of personal info, I'd vote yes. For everything else a mod does, I'd vote no.

In the end though, it's like LG said...we're all ultimately responsible for what info we give. I am responsible for the fact that my phone number is now in the hands of someone I'd likely rather not have it, but it's my own fault for being careless. BS wasn't responsible for what KS did, however he was ultimately responsible for his info being readily available. The fallout from those careless actions on our parts will not be able to be handled by a mod anyways, so if Laurel and Manu choose to do nothing about it, then we all need to learn to be more careful instead.

BINGO!

Too bad everyone didn't see it this way, instead of blaming Laurel/Manu or demanding THEY do something about it. (In most cases)

i remember when i first joined some wingnut was posting pictures of her kids. when nicely (too nicely) told maybe it wasn't such a good idea, she got defensive and in responding to the insult wound up revealing even MORE personal info.

but she did it. and a mod stopping her would be a whole big brother/daddy knows best thing. i can't sanction that.

i've made no secret that society needs a thinning of the herd. but i wouldn't want anyone but me doing the thinning. that's unfair, so we live with each other. welcome to life.

On the other hand, I WOULD like to see the admins do something about people like the one who hacked Ducky's account. I'm sure they could figure out who it is, and get rid of them.

I believe QD posted earlier, somewhere, that L &M were aware and handling it!

That is really up to the interpretation of the Moderators.

Which is the basic problem with having mods on the GB.

At which point has a post crossed the line? Everyone of us here has a different line than everyone else.

LG, I hope so.

No, it isn't. If a moderator tells you otherwise, report him or her to Laurel.

I am liking the GB cafe type thing. After spending a year in the freeforall, I could go for having a quieter GB niche to hang out in from time to time.

Moderators are supposed to make out LitExperience more enjoyable, according to Lit's blurb on the subject.

Therefore, I'd like a bevy of hot kinky bitches available on cam to do my bidding 24/7 while I post.

What the rest of you do with your hurt feelings over nasty posts is irrelevant.

You don't know for sure that one of your parents isn't a Mod.

I figure anyone would be welcome who is willing to have a mod to enforce the guidelines if someone has a problem with self-restraint.
