Missing avatars

Hopefully everyone who got whited out gets their avatars back, or at least has the photos saved somewhere. It's silly, but avatar picks for me are like a big part of someone's online identity. It melds into peoples personalities, and seeing them change is like seeing someone shapeshift. It's jarring and strange.

The pic is safely stored on my computer. If the site doesn't return it automatically soon, I'll upload it again. I'm pretty sure that most people think my pic is the best thing about me.
 
Just curious... How many of us with disappearing avatars were involved in the discussion on censorship??? Not that I'm prone to conspiracies or anything like that... :)

I was pretty well involved, but so far I've been safe from the avatar eater.
 
One possibility (maybe this has been mentioned) is that disappearing the avatars is a way for the site to pace a forced review of users' avatars. You know. Clear out a fifth of the avatars and review the new avatars as they're replaced. Then do the next fifth, etc.

Only active accounts will replace their avatars, and that may be a small fraction of the number they would otherwise have to deal with.

I don't think that explains why avatars provided by the site have disappeared.

So what do I want to do with my avatar? I've only ever had one avatar on the story side, but I've had at least four different avatars on the forum (I changed them to match what I was writing, or thinking about writing). Maybe I should take this occasion to make them the same.

Me neither. You're welcome to borrow the 10' pole I've used to not touch that thread, along with the Nomex jumpsuit.

I checked and the missing avatars all have different URLs. My guess is this is a technical glitch on Lit's side, or on the side of one of their vendors like their CDN.

It could also be one of those spores that infects other life forms and takes control of them and makes them eat brains or something.

Oh no! Mine has gone too. It's been years since I uploaded it. I'm not even sure I have a copy

If I click on edit on my white avatar, I get a page where my existing avatar is still there 🤷‍♀️

When I do that, it shows me my avatar from the story side, which was different from my avatar in the forum. You have the same avatar on both sides.

I think it looks like a tactic to get us to use the same, reviewed avatar on both sides of the site.

I’ve only ever uploaded an avatar on the Control Panel => Options page. And that still has my avatar. Where else do you have to upload it?

Your forum account settings.

Now if I go to the forum account settings and click "Edit" on the blank avatar it leads me to the Control Panel => Options page. Maybe we can't have separate avatars.

I tried that, uploaded and it says waiting for moderation now. THat might take a while give the # of people impacted

I feel bereft without my avatar :(
