I never uploaded an avatar for the forum side, and the site provided a purple circle with a J in it.

That's gone, which is why I don't see the small circle for the threads I've commented on.

I saw that it was missing...so I changed it to a new one. not sure what happened to the old one.

This is troublesome, as it's not happening all at once, it's crawling through the system. It's a known problem, yet it continues as if the admins have no control over it. You "cool folks?" Just wait your turn.

The original suggestion that it was targeted at controversial content relative to new rules - such as nudity, copyright, and AI - made some sense. But original photos (such as mine) are getting hoovered-up as well. That said, if it's not a bad actor having found an exploit, somebody suggested it might be related to culling by upload date. Bad form, if so.

As to why this is a big issue, I agree with the observation that we "recognize" each other in conversation by their avatar. This loss in an active forum is a biggie.

No, mine DID get removed already. The one up there now is the one I uploaded years ago, on the STORY side of the site.

It isn't just uploaded avatars that are missing. People who had an avatar supplied by the system also lost their avatars. That suggests to me that it isn't the content of the avatar that's the problem.

Well, evidently it's just the forum DB. I checked earlier and my story-side avatar is the same and is intact.

I suspect that Lit changed the way they're moderated behind the scenes, and wiping everyone's avatar in waves is their way of putting it all through a new level of stringency

I agree. If it were the content of the avatar, the affected avatars should all route to the same URL as the offending one was replaced with the blank one. That's not what we're seeing.

My avatar was uploaded on the story side. I wasn't even aware until today that it was possible to have different story side and forum side avatars.

I can't see Simon's eyeball either, and there are some posts in the Help forum complaining about avatars disappearing... it sounds like it might be a database glitch!

Seems to be some kind of hiccup, some images are coming back.

How did you get the old one "up" already? I just re-uploaded mine and was greeted with, "Uploaded successfully, awaiting moderation," or something like that.

Mine vanished so I uploaded a new one before I went to bed. It seems to have gone through moderation just fine, so I'm back, albeit slightly differently.
