Mink

killing an animal just to look good doesn't seem right to me

I presume then that you wear no make-up, use no soap, eat no meat and wear only clothing made from oil?

Wrong on that point- get your newspaper out and look at the coat I'm talking about. I think it is beautiful. :)

Well, miss zoo supporter, I disagree. You'd get laughed at.

It can be beautiful and still be laughed at. That was the point of the thread, ya know?

i eat meat because that is a healthy part of my diet

i use make up sometimes but none that is tested on animals

im not perfect i try to limit what i do to be enviromental and not to hurt animals

i just think furs are at the extreme end of animal cruelty takes 55 minks to make one coat

Omnivore and proud of it!

3. Harvesting fur from animals raised for the purpose is no more unethical than growing corn; a living thing is a living thing.
Finally!

I do not advocate killing animals specifically for their pelts, ivory, horns or for any other cosmetic or fashion application . But I see a clear distinction when it comes to food. Lance is absolutely correct that there is no difference between eating animal flesh and harvesting plants for sustenance.

And vegetarians would do well to remember that when they are smacking their lips on sweet potato soufflé. They should all just say no to cotton underwear, too. In fact we should all say no to underwear. ;)

I'm not prejudiced. I eat everyone. I mean everything.

*aside to Lance*- Intelligent post and quite amusing. You had me right up until the last sentence in # 5. Pig.

...thinking. Pig = bacon. Yummm

Especially if that's all she's wearing. :)

yep, I would.

I'd wear a fur coat.

Except, I'd rather have big furry boots. Those seem like they would be a lot of fun.

I eat cow in a box too.

and foie gras.

I wear leather.

Everything has a purpose, if the mink's purpose it to be my furry boots, than so be it.

lance was saying its ok to raise animals for their furs not just for food that's what i disagree with

31 million animals are raised and killed a year for their furs in fur farms

and these are wild animals that aren't domesticated and they are kept in cages barely big enough for them to move

i really can't see how anyone can like animals and wear fur

Yes indeed it certainly is, just as it's okay to raise chickens in little cages to kill and eat after harvesting their eggs and sticking their feathers in a pillow.

I don't think there are Free Range Mink Coats, but if there were....would that be okay Sexy-Girl?

You'd have loved my grandfather, by the way...he was a sea captain who killed a lot of seals, then retired and started....a poultry farm! He was a real man, I tell ya; we'd go and break the necks of ailing chickens before breakfast, snap snap snap like pluckin' daisies, then mend nets, smoke cigars, drink port and go fishin' in the harbour.

Ah, to be 8 again!

Agent 99, I made # 5 last in the list for a reason, you know...so you could go: "Yep, uh huh, yep, hey this guy's enlightened....then....boi-oi-oi-oing! He's a pig-dog?!"

Tip: Ruby's reaction is the way to go, 99.....

:)

lance you can't see any kind of difference in eating a chicken and killing 55 minks for one coat to look good ?

This thread reminds me of a time in high school when a friend of mine was lecturing me on the immorality of eating meat while using a can of hairspray and a lighter to kill a roach on the wall of her house.

If I could afford mink, had a practical use for it and a place to wear it I'd buy it.

Now Lance, you know it's only wrong to kill cute, furry animals!

Well if you're stuck on the "looking good" part, SG, I don't know how far you'll be able to go with me on this, because obviously you're hung up on the sex appeal of a shimmering mink coat.

However, I'll give it a shot again...just for you.

First, 1 chicken does not equal 55 mink.

So, let's talk about 1 mink and 1 chicken, okay?

Both are raised in cages.

Neither ever lived in the wild; they are bred to be raised and slaughtered for their assets.

Chickens are bred for their feathers, eggs and flesh.

Mink are bred for their fur and the rendered oil from their carcasses which is used in a variety of products.

Chicken feathers are used to keep you warm.

Mink fur is used to keep you warm.

Just because the mink is prettier than the chicken doesn't make killing one any different than killing the other, SG.

You anti-chicken types are so shallow!

Women go grocery shopping in their minks around where I live.

Nausea ensues.

Now *that* is tacky!

I used to work for the Alley Theatre in Houston. Opening nights during the winter we'd always keep a coat rack in the house office for the furs. Now, Houston's not quite that formal a city, but it wasn't like there were all that many other places for the oil-wives to wear their furs. *shrug* I got to pet the pretty coats, so I didn't complain about being a glorified coat-check girl on those nights.

Granted, here in Texas fur just isn't done. But we simply don't have weather to justify them. In other parts of the country, especially in the Northeast and Chicago where society's a bit more formal than down here, furs are still not uncommon.

I don't think it's being out of touch with social issues. I think it's simply taking an unpopular stance and choosing one's own morals instead of having them decided for you.

is it really necessary that you try to insult me when you're debating with me ? ... i say "looking good" because a mink coat is a luxury item its not something needed to live

mink are wild animals their natural environment is in the wild

http://www.coyoteptmuseum.org/whats_new/wn_images/mink.jpg

that's what they are meant to look like ... i dont think they are exactly cute they are quite vicious creatures actually

55 mink is how many are used to make a single coat ... so you can't compared it as 1 mink 1 chicken

chickens are used for food and i only eat free range chickens they are also domesticated animals their natural environment is a free range farm

there are other ways to keep warm that work better then a mink coat ... and if you really need that fur look then get a fake fur coat in my opinion

nora ... i didn't start getting preachy until the pro fur people started :) ... i gave my opinion that i didn't like fur and then i was joking with cheyenne ... i only started quoting facts once people started having a go at me for being anti-fur

"Happy Chickens".....oh gawd you're funny in a cute, naive way!

What you really meant was: "Happy Marketing Exec Earns Obscene Bonus From Egg Marketing Board for Increasing Egg Sales to Fools with Two Words..."Free Range" ...& Buys Cadillac STS While Laughing His Hole Off", right?

Here's a shocker....you know Evian water, "bottled in the Alps"?

Just spell Evian backwards....

You don't have to like minks or chickens....just don't be fooled and thereby controlled in your decision making over these "issues".

Lance's posts about chickens are why I only buy and eat "happy chicken" eggs. I always look for free range or cage free chicken eggs. It's the only way to go.

Minks are like souped up Caddys.

Must we all be sheep? I fucking recent social pressures. Why should I let the world think for me and make me conform to their standards? Reminds me of the moral majority. Makes me want to go buy a full-length mink coat and wear it to the grocery store.
