It was good of the Romans to teach the Brits how to speak.
How to write. perhaps. How to speak? Probably not. It was the Anglo-Saxons who brought the language.
Until the 14th century most nobility and clergy spoke French while everyone else spoke Anglo-Saxon - until Chaucer. That is why we have different words for animals and their flesh- Pigs or Swine for those who looked after them; Pork for those who ate them.
