here is how.
if the character comes form a city that exists.... new york, (wow most of them come from there lol) LA etc... it's marvel

if they come from made up citys Gotham or Matopalis (little known fact matropalis is actualy Toronto with a different name and super man was made by a canadian.... so why is he an american hero?) then it's DC comics

Cause superman was cocreated with an American in the United states and sold to DC comics..

The Daily Planet was based on the Toronto Star and was gonna be called the Daily Star but many news papers in the US used the word star and some papers would not carry the superman daily strip if he worked at the star cause they didnt want a competitors name in their paper.
