Mandatory Military Service in the US?

Military service is not a magic program to fix all of society's ills such as overweight, and being irresponsible. Believe it or not, there're many overweight and/or irresponsible people in the service.

Other than that, I don't give a shit, as it's too early to consider such matters.

A war?

You haven't read up on technology for the troops lately, body armor, the ability to acurately kill the enemy in all environment conditions, and good food to boot! We've had pretty close to three years of 24/7 satellite monitoring, and on the ground SF observations of target profiles. We know what to hit, where, and in what sequence. The Iraqi Republican Guard will be annililated in the first two hours, the rest of the conscript army in 24hrs. Occupation will be for about 90days.

My mistake, the point I was trying to get across. It's not a violation of the 13th Amendment as our unemployed lawyer says.

HA! Yeah, it's not really forced labor or anything like that. Maybe they could throw in an option that gives the person the option to not do the term, in exchange for some sort of privlidge that Americans are used to. I can't think of something off the top of my head... but I'm sure someone is going to think of something

I'm not saying it's a magical fix for society, but even me, in my limited military experience (Read: JROTC), even something as lame as that got me thinking about the bigger picture. I was taught about the sacrifices of others for the greater good, and the benefits of discipline and structure. All in all, I walked away a much better person. more focused and capable.

Contradiction

Note the contradiction. One the one hand we're told Iraq is a grave threat to us. When someone expresses concern about casualties, the war supporters then turn around and say we can easily and quickly defeat Iraq's military. In other words, Iraq is not a threat to us at all.

They're trying to have it both ways.

What stance are you taking now?

*shrugs* I like it. In a country where a great majority of the poeple are overweight, and there are more uneducated people then there should be, AND the fact that I think basic military service is a great thing for anyone, I think it's a great idea.

All a person has to say is, I am a conscientious objector. That's it, no test. You say it, end os service before it began. And/or you could say I'm a gay conscientious objector.

Iraq's military is not a threat. Iraq's ambition and possession of WOMD is.

Wrong. The threat from Iraq is not from the military, it's from the single terrorist with a WoMD. One person with a NBC weapon can kill tens of thousands. That is the threat

Another thing I'd like to see....

When I was in the first time, we had alot of troops that were offered military service in lieu of jail time. My Sergeant had been an inner city thug, got caught stealing a car, and got this option. 24 years later, he was still in, and thanking the judge for giving him this chance and opportunity to make good in his life. I knew alot of standup troops that went in this way, I wonder if it would work for the borderline kids now, as they already sent them to juvenile boot camps. Think about it, good food, regular pay, a cool uniform, chicks/dudes, and you can go out twice a month and shoot the shit out of things! Woohoo! If they fuck up in there, they get Leavenworth......win-win scenario. :D

Absurdity

Forcing people to go into the military against their will absolutely IS involuntary servitude, even if it's just for "training." To say otherwise is a total inversion and denial of reality.

And the argument that the threat from Iraq is a terrorist with a "weapon of mass destruction" is equally absurd. There's no evidence whatsoever linking Iraq to Sept. 11, and invading Iraq is not going to stop an individual terrorist. To the contrary, it will make another terrorist attack much more likely.

The real reason Bush wants to invade Iraq is obvious: oil.

No 'duh'!

If it wasn't for selective service, you wouldn't be speaking english, and if you were Jewish, you wouldn't be speaking, period! You insult every war grave and sacrifice with your nonsense, you probably view the flag as a racist symbol.....:D

Nevermind the thousands upon thousands and thousands who signed up willingly.

Ignorant people who don't know "then" from "than," perhaps?

Couldn't think of real response... one that made a decent point, so you decided to make fun of a minor grammatical mistake, hmm?

Were you the guy in charge of the Volume button when they played heavy metal to get Noriega out of the house?
Did you have a remote control for the job or was it hard work manual labour?

Your post was so wholly ridiculous as not to bear a serious response. Manditory Military service is antithetical to what America deludes itself that it is about.

And, I'm a combat veteran, skippy.

It's called Psyops.....

Sure beats storming his compound killing all his staff when all we needed was his fat ass. Don't you have some wooden shoes to whittle, or a windmill to chase? :D
