I like this one...it reminds of Raylan Givens on Justified, "You ever hear of the saying "you run into an asshole in the morning, you ran into an asshole; you run into assholes all day, you're the asshole.""

A great show. It made me feel sorry for Dewey Crow. Nothing ever worked out for that boy.

I run into assholes all day long for some reason.

Greetings and Salutations everyone!

How many of your bullshit meters would go off if you came across an opening line like that. Mine is highly attuned to those who try to use their writing as a way to impress. The literate ones among us (see previous troll topic for more discussion in those who aren't) can express ourselves full well without trying to be elegant. Sure, some have a better way with words than others, but don't waltz in here and try to write as if your Maya Angelou.

What's your bullshit meter attuned for?

Writing elegantly is an art, and there are many here who do it without pretentiousness. Those who can't do it and think they can. .. those are the ones I'm wary of. One should know one's own limitations. ...*sniff*

Not gonna lie, my bullshit meter on Lit is typically out of order. I have to ask my Lit friends to help me out sometimes... OK, more than sometimes.

However, I do know good writing, and I know the difference between someone being a good and eloquent writer, and someone who thinks he/she is a good and eloquent writer, but is really just trying too hard to impress. You don't have to be an accomplished journalist/novelist/etc to catch my eye, but please don't try to bathe me in adjectives and flowery prose when you really just have no idea what you're doing. It's embarrassing, and I'll just delete your PM or skip over your post.

Say what you mean, say it clearly, and I'll respect you in the morning.

Disclaimer: It's late and I've had a long day, and I have no idea if what I've just said is on topic at all. Apologies all around if I'm the one who looks as if she has no idea what she's doing.

Taking from SweetSam's post (you sure seemed to be on topic to me) what is the best way to handle the poster who is off topic in a thread but thinks they are on topic? Seems that most will simply ignore. If it's someone "popular" and there's a potential thread jacking opportunity, friends will join in. But I'm talking about that unintentional, off topic post that you swear was written by your crazy uncle.

I'm guilty of just skipping over and picking up where the actual thread topic left off. :D

I've been reading through again. I love the topics here. :D

Like you said, most of us will simply ignore that crazy uncle. Just like we do at the family reunion.

I certainly wouldn't embarrass someone by pointing out that they missed the point. Even if they were a bit daft. Those are some of my favorite people here.

Thankfully, I have no such things.

:)

I've seen people post the most ridiculous things.. I wonder what planet some are on if they're being serious. Being on the GB has proven over and over to me how truly fucked in the head people can be.

Happy Friday Litiquette-ville, coast through it or work like hell to try and get everything done?

It's fascinating how given the exact same situation, people approach uniquely and outcomes always vary. Understood that we are all individuals, but isn't there a finite number of outcomes?

All that to ask, how do you respond when you stumble across something here you just don't like? Do you sidestep or turn into the town crier?

This is my last day off before I work seven in a row.. Happy Friday indeed!

ok.. when I come across something I don't like..

It depends what it is. The other day, someone disagreed with something I'd said and pointed out where I might be mistaken. I think the initial response is to not like that.. but she was right and I responded because.. well.. she was right - and I think it was cool that she bothered to stick up for the other persons view.

If it's something though where I stumble upon some shockingly perverted adult scene that I just can't imagine myself in.. I politely move on (and laugh about it with my friends in private messages)

I deal with conflict all day at work. This really is where I need to create NEW conflict.

Good luck with the 7-day stint G-Gasm :-\

If it's something obviously illegal then I'll report it - that's what the "!" is there for.

Other times, I'll let other people do the shouting - they do it so well and often they raise points that didn't occur to me. I don't feel confident enough to start lecturing people twice my age, unless they're on my turf.

Usually I ignore it, but if it's offensive I'll call the person out on it.

I couldn't imagine a place where everything pleased me so for the most part I just walk away with the attitude 'to each his own'....
I think I can count two situations where I piped up....a troll who pushed my buttons and a romance so public and disruptive it interrupted the flow of dozens of threads.
I have enough conflict in real life so I try to avoid it here. I'm more passive aggresive and will vent In the random blurt threads that the op seems to love so much
Now...saying all this....if we have a p.m. history I'm more apt to tell you what I think privately.

I HATE drama and avoid it at all costs. .. so I usually sidestep.

The few times I can think of that I addressed something here was when someone was being extremely offensive or rude, especially to someone I know. :)

I am definitely coasting today . . .

There are some styles and flavors I don't really like here and I usually just move on because there is no accounting for taste. But for overt racial, personal, ethnic, etc. slurs -- those idiots usually provoke a response from me.

I think it's more important to be responsible for our own reactions rather than judge the actions of others.

With that said, the other night there were workers still cutting tile at 8:30 in the evening next door and I went over, pointed at my wrist and asked "Que paso?"

Today though, I'm coasting so much I might even hit the coast ;)

All of my life I've had a strong sense of social justice. I find it very difficult to keep my lips sealed if I feel someone has been wronged, something said is just not accurate, hypocritical, intentionally ignorant etc. It can get me into trouble at times but I truly think it's important too speak out and stand up. I realise this might just be a sex forum but it's inhabited by real people with real lives, feelings, values, and beliefs. Words have power, I think it's important to try and care about that at times when it's warranted.

I totally agree with Rainy. I can't sit back and say nothing if I think something is unjust. I've gotten myself into trouble speaking up for other people and even had them shun me because they were too scared to go against the people giving them the hard time.

In Litville if I see someone being harsh I will speak up. I don't go looking for confrontation but I won't sit back and say nothing. That makes you just as bad as the bully.

Oh ok ***HUGS*** :rose:
... can we do a group hug thing for people that speak up because they're awesome?
