Some other I just take with a grain of salt. I can tell by now who the transient ones are. So, for a good time, they're it. But beyond that, they're not

Did you come here expecting to be trusting, then find out that you weren't? Or the opposite? You expected to be paranoid, but ended up trusting rather readily.

For me, I didn't expect to trust anyone with my real name. Here I am, a couple years later and I've given someone complete access to all aspects of my life.

I was way too trusting when i joined. I've learnt to use lots of grains of salt and hide the heart on my sleeve.

I didn't come here with any expectations. I am a trusting person by nature. I have given a few people here my real name, which is a very uncommon name, so if they wanted to, they could find out who I was in real life.

There are a few people here that I would trust with my life, without even having to know them on a "real-life" basis. I can't explain why. I just feel it.

I trusted Pmann with my $200 that he said was rent to post here - I know I'll get it back.

I have some issues with trust so I'm guarded about what details I reveal. I don't have a FB because it has caused so much trouble for some people close to me - maybe in a couple of years when I more settled?

I email one or two people outside of Lit and it's shame I can't afford to visit the US and pop in on them.

As for the follow up question: nope, I was every bit as careful when I started posted on Lit as I am now.

I expected to be less trusting than what I am. My first forum experience was on a board called Fucked Company, it was like the GB here, except more misogynistic, more racist, and more evil. People would out others' real names, where they lived, etc. and would do so for minor indiscretions. One guy and gal had a shared username that the guy wanted to keep. When he changed the password, she didn't like it, hacked into his email and his yahoo account and post things like his cyber chat history. She basically destroyed his life.

I didn't open up until a few friends like AvailableSlave4U and others opened up to me.

There was no moderator. Total free speech. And people could post without registering. You would put a . in the signin block and you could post away. Then they could attack people at will. One friend there was a Korean-American girl and when we first were on there was a subforum that she would post nekkid pictures of herself. And instead of being happy that this very attractive lady was posting pics, they would say stuff in the threads like, "why don't you shave your coochie, you g*** whore." She left, started her own board and I inherited it for a few years.

A version of it is still out there, but I don't go there much. It was funny at times, especially at first, before the stormfronters (renegades from a racist site) arrived, and I find myself still using some of the sayings that were used there. Like WAYSA? Which means, "why are you still alive?" People would start a thread and the title would be, "If you're not at least 6 foot tall..." and the first entry would be, "WAYSA?"

If you did an AMA (I'm making French toast, Ask Me Anything!) the first question always was, "what are you wearing?"

People would start a thread threatening suicide, and one of the first posts would be, "can I have your stereo?"

I inherited the board and there was a glitch with the PHPBB software, where you could somehow change your username and post as somebody else. Two guys thought it was funny to post as two of the biggest a**holes on that other board. I thought I'd have a heart attack, thinking that this self-contained board where people shared details of their lives and pictures of their kids, etc. was infected by those two.

The software was fixed, and implemented, after about 4 hours, but I was pretty mad about it. I almost shut the board down right then. It survived a few years, but then we all became FB friends, so it wasn't really worth it.

I think people forget that there are real people on the other sides of these screens. It's one thing to argue and have a spat online. But it's another to be cruel or whatever.

I mean, some people are pretty sensitive. You say one thing they don't like and they act like you fingered their cat. But then there are the other people who can be pretty cruel.

Actually, I think they do know there's another person - very much so, but I think it's a chance to be nasty with no come back or risk. There's been a few trolls in the news over here lately - like one woman who posted hundreds of horrible Tweets to the McCann's whose little girl disappeared in Spain a few years back. And, 28% of Americans must know there's someone else there!

I tend to agree that a lot of people are just assholes. Unfortunately, we now have an anonymous outlet for them, places like here and in comment sections of blogs and news articles. I'd say most people aren't assholes, but the ones who are sure are loud.

And that woman who was tormenting the McCanns turned up dead, right? Strangely, I'm not broken up about it. Karma can be a beotch.

In the beginning I was very cautious. Over time I've started to loosen up, probably too much so. I'm inclined to be trusting, and even though I know to keep my guard up it's easy to be lulled into a false sense of security. Foolish, really.

I've undoubtedly over shared here and there, though not to the point of real name and address. Or pics. Still...I should be more careful.

^ This. I've been a little shocked at the vituperation that arise from something as simple as a difference of opinion. After a while you can't help but notice it's the same repeat offenders. I suspect they walk through real life spewing out the same hate they dump on the board....
