I read profiles to see what people say about themselves and the pictures they post. the pictures are more telling to me.

I am wary of posters with no avatar who have been her for years and made about 4 posts - I seem to attract a lot of them to my PM box

Happy Tuesday! The infamous profile. We assume many don't bother to read them. Some are quite vague, like mine, and some are essentially a Lit resume. I'm curious, after it's all said and done, how important is the profile? If we assume a large percent of Litsters don't read them, we don't bother to ever update our profiles, and if we are mysterious with their content, what's their value?

I put much more value in people's posts as far as saying hi, and my minimalism reflects that, I guess. I do open the odd profile if I think a good pic may be there, I will admit. I dislike the ones with laundry lists of things people are not interested in, or ones that seek some high level of intellectualism. Life is made of all kinds of convos.

I read profiles, especially if I've rec'ed a msg from someone I haven't "met" yet. I'll read the profile of a litster whose post has caught my eye, too.

Umm. I haven't read my profile lately, guess I should check it.

Exactly this.^

Wise women...

I've had a profile for so long and expected one for so long that it's second nature for me to check when I first encounter someone, whether through a rare PM or from reading a post that intrigues me. Not having a profile is not a deal breaker, though it is disappointing not to get at least a little bit of insight into how someone thinks.

Mine used to be informative, flirty, and fun. Now it's none of those. Sometimes I'll read others, and especially good (stupid) ones, I'll forward to Gatorgurl, she can appreciate my taking the time, because I'm nice like that.

By coincidence, I've seen three noobs this week with the same age, profession and prolific use of posting their picture. Of course, now I think they are one and the same.

oops, sorry

I agree with that. Opening the profile of someone unfamiliar is like having a peek inside a mystery box, and it's disappointing to find nothing there apart from a "N/A". There have been a few times when I was considering dropping a friendly PM to a Litster, but I chose not to because their absence of profile information suggested to me that this might be unwelcome.

I also like the peek into who they want us to see them as, it opens windows for conversation.

I like reading profiles, if the person has taken the time to fill one out. I like to change mine up every now and then just to kept other profile readers entertained. I think a sweet little profile is a window into a posters soul. I think the absence of a sweet little profile is also a window into a persons soul. Sometimes, what we don't say is more revealing than what we do say. Ommm.

My profile is short and sweet, and to the point. I say I'm married, so don't PM me asking if I'm married. Why should I bother to take time to respond to someone who can't take time to read my profile?

And vague profiles irritate me.*

*But only a little. ;)

A profile seems kind of like an invitation: letting folks know what you are about and may be interested in sharing. A vague or non-informative profile is really not inviting at all. Of course, if the profile is interesting then I find myself checking some of their posts to get a better feel for the person. I don't have a problem with unwanted PM's so I haven't had to use it as a way to screen or prevent messages I'd rather not get. But from reading many ladies posts I can see why they would want to use a profile that way.

I love reading other people's profiles. I'm nosey though :D It's the first thing I do when someone pm's me, then I check their posts and that pretty much determines whether I reply.

Ugh. Let's hope others aren't so diligent in their research. Otherwise, I'm fucked.

From time to time I get called out on something. Maybe it's something as benign as my vague profile ;) or at most extreme I was called "limp-dick". I'll admit that upon hearing that last one I tried to keep my dick constantly hard but sadly that wasn't something I could do. ;) the topic is, how responsive are people to criticism on lit. I know most will say they don't heed it or "Fuck'em, I am who I am" but deep down inside don't we all at least lol at what we're being criticized for and determine if we think it's valid. I think most of us say to ourselves "am I really.......?" But maybe not.

I figure the people on here know one side of me. A few pictures and a lot of words don't mean all of me, so the criticism mostly rolls off. If there's something I can improve upon, I'm willing to try, but it has to come from more than one person. One person's perspective, does not an issue make. Truthfully, I am what I am, and there are many things I'm not willing to change about me.

it depends on whether or not the criticism comes from someone I've come to respect. I've taken a little bit of heat on other boards. Sometimes I respond, sometimes I don't. As much as GB gets a bad rap for their arguing, there are also several members who can take the heat and still manage an intelligent, provocative discussion.

often, people get emotionally charged about a topic and it can be difficult to understand the foundation for the emotional response if you're in a discussion with a stranger. If this happens with a friend, I'm more likely to ask about it.

if it's one of those people who uses hurtful criticism as a means of debate, I have a little internal voice that reminds me that everyone learns to fit in differently and mother nature can usually work that out without my help.

Going back to the profile thing, I tend to keep my blank or just a bunch of sarcastic nonsense. Note recent update toward the latter.

As far as criticism goes, I put stock in it if I truly care about the voice of the critic. If not, pffffffffffft, my give a fuck is purposefully turned off.

Criticism I can handle, when that comes it is either something that allows me to take the time to reflect upon it, realize that it's true and I can better myself; or, it's just someone's opinion about something that really doesn't matter to me so I can just shrug it off.

The thing that is much more painful to me is to be ignored. If I've taken the time to post in a meaningful way about something that is bothering me or that is putting something out there for a response, then to get no response at all eats at me much worse than any criticism ever does.
