So, do you collect art? What's in your house? What's your tchotchke situation like? Or tinkie-winkes, as my dad would say. When you sit in your living room, what are you surrounded by? What are some of your favorite items to rest your eyes upon?

Interesting question, actually! I'm going to be moving this weekend so I'll be setting up my old bookshelf and library again.

My old apartment was pretty awesome though. I had bookshelves with my book and Bluray/DVD libraries and some display pieces and action figures on the book shelves. Plus there were a bunch of movie and music posters displayed in frames. Lou Reed, the Ramones, a Springsteen concert one, a few paper clippings from doing music and playing around. Lots of guitars around too. And of course my betta fish (who passed on last year, time to get a new one) My new place is pretty much just going to be this again.

My house is pretty eclectic (surprise, right?)

Most of the wall art was either done by me, or friends, or family members.
I do a lot of collage work, pen and ink, printmaking...some painting. I have several canvases my mom painted. Photos taken by my dad or brother. Quilts from my aunt. A horseshoe from my cousin's horse. Bits of textiles sewn by my grandma.

Some favorites:

A photo taken by my dad of snow banks alongside the Niagara river in January. The picture is a color photo but you'd never know. It's all shades of grey. To a Floridian, this is considered exotic

A tiny block print I did of a guitarist silhouetted in a window

A canvas my mom painted of abstract looking flora-- crazy colors

A black and white photo my brother took of a poem about prayer beads that was painted on a wall at a local shop

A piece of stained glass my other brother made-- a circle of red lilies

A table runner my grandmother quilted in bold color blocks

Hanging vases mounted on the wall full of cascading philodendrons that my BF fashioned out of old milk bottles and copper wire

A little dish my daughter made me out of clay that I put rings in

And aside from the in-house artwork, I also love my collection of hand painted sugar skulls, my old-timey radio, and my Michael Jackson clock from ChinaTown in NYC

I know how you feel. My brother who did stained glass? His artwork means the world to me, as he and I are, unfortunately, estranged.

And all my grandparents are gone but I've got their art as well... guess I'm from a creative family tree

Oh! Also!! The grill from my BFs old pick up truck fell off and we mounted it on the wall in his son's room. It's *awesome*

Yes, I collect art. mostly by local artists, some of them who have marketable names in niche markets.

A quick art tour of the walls.

-North wall (with door). An original Japanese brush painting on canvas (picked up when I worked in Japan). It's a modern street scene of Osaka (the street on which I lived).

-West Wall. An original broadsheet poster for the movie "Breaker Morant", one of my favorites, it was a gift from a nephew.

-South Wall. A pair of Samurai swords and a Ikebana style flower arrangement.

-East Wall. A small incidental shelf above an electronic fireplace. The shelf catches odds and ends I like - currently it is home to three Funko Pop figures (Jack Burton, Gracie Law, and Lo Pan from "Big Trouble In Little China".

-On the floor by the east wall is an original "found item" sculpture of Buddha contemplating his reflection in a brass bowl by a local artist.

-Master bedroom is very minimal - bed, two night stands, a single lamp, and another "found art" sculpture by the same local artist of a set of empty picture frames (it is a constant reminder of the Buddhist maxim of the self/no-self).

-Guest Bedroom is more traditional - bed, drawers, desk, three book shelves loaded with books and a couple of small pieces of Japanese pottery and Navajo pottery (all originals).

I rotate art (and art themes) on a fairly regular basis, so I have a closet area full of low value pieces (paintings, sculpture) and a secure storage space to store original paintings in a temperature controlled area.

I have a self-painting I purchased from a fellow employee back when I was 22. I generally hate portraits, but this part-time artist was nearly photographic in her ability.

I have two realism landscape paintings, one by an unknown artist, and another from circa 1920.

I have a antique sword from the revolutionary war. this is an identical replacement of a family sword that my grandfather broke when my dad was a kid and was recklessly playing with it.

I have a viking sword I purchased from the Franklin Mint when I was 26.

I have an antique sewing machine from 1918

I have an antique lamp from circa 1935

I have an antique cedar box from circa 1945

I have a brass antique sewing kit from circa 1887

I have a Japanese sterling silver cigarette case that I am still looking up it's provenance.

I have too many books to describe, though I guess I could say there are
two bookcases worth, and are of assorted works of fiction, history and referential information.

I am currently trying to obtain either the original or a copy of "Yosemite Valley" by Albert Bierstadt; a painting of the hudson river school of art movement.

I can't think of any others, though I am probably missing a couple...

My living room is currently a home gym, so I wouldn't take decorating tips from me.

I'm a big fan of photos. I transplanted, so photos of those I love but cannot see on a regular basis are all over the place. I'm also a minimalist, so there's not a lot of "stuff" in my home that doesn't serve a purpose.

I only have one piece of art- a wooden and copper installation in my entry. I fell in love with the natural elements at an art Fair and hubby commissioned them to make me a piece for my birthday. It's distressed copper that's been electrocuted to make some interesting patterns and wood cut across the grain. I'm pretty fond of it.

Motivation. Some people have no vision and no motivation. Sometimes it's lack of drive. Sometimes it's just lack of influence or education.

What or who gets you motivated? Is there anyone in your life that has had tremendous influence on the way you live? Maybe your occupation. Maybe the way you dress. Maybe it was an event. They can be simple experiences. Or it could be someone meaningful like a parent or me.
