I got linked to two articles about the upcoming "Leave No Child behind" program Bush wants to institute. As with all things in life, there's a catch.

If schools want money, they have to give a complete roster with full phone numbers and addresses to the military. That already makes me a little antsy, but, since most of that information can be found in a phone book, It's kind of a grey privacy issue, but it's still a very uncomfortable thing for me to have the military to have my info like that.

However, Bush wants this in the program for the purposes of military recruitment.

I don't know how many of you have been persued by a military recruiter, but let me assure you, they are the worst scum of our armed services. There are men who go and fight and die for our country, the honorable soldiers, and then there are these jackasses. The military recruiter doesn't take no for an anwser, much like your average telemarketer. However, unlike a telemarker, you can't be taken off the list by request or placed on a do not call list.

I got off lucky with these guys, only three or four phone calls. The last two went like this

MR: Hello Mr. (checks list) Aroonie, have you ever considered what the Marines have to offer?
S: No, because it's not what i want to do.
MR: The Marines offer a lifetime of opportunity, they build character and can teach you nearly anything. What are your plans for the future?
S: Well in about two and a half weeks I'll be going to Undisclosed University.
MR: Have you ever considered the Marines instead? What will your major be?
S: I'm trying to get into Undisclosed Discipline.
MR: The Marines have a great Undisclosed program....
And so on and so on.

God Forbid you should be really physically fit and have more than a walnut in your brain. The Air Force will come after you hard. I heard the story of a guy who was so sought after that his parents had to tell the AF that he was dead for them to stop calling.

Leave no child behind, leave no child free from harassment courtesy your national governemnt. Go USA #1!

Well, I agree with you that schools shouldn't have to give out phone #'s to get federal funding. Then again I didn't research this, so I hope this isn't another one of your famous spinaroonie fact-stretching threads. I'll take your word for it for now.

Yes, it's pain in the ass to have recruiters calling you, just like it's a pain in the ass to have telemarketers calling you.

Would you rather put up with a handful of phonecalls from a recruiter, or should we just forget that and bring back the draft?

Right. Schools should not sell-out children for money. At what point do schools become places for our children to be exploited?

While, I'm firmly on the record as anti-draft, I recognize that our nation does need to recruit people for our military. With the exception of the month or so following 9/11, military enrollment has been down. However, I don't believe that harassment is the idea to get it. We look to the founding fathers for so many gov't issues, let's look at them again.

Benjamin Franklin once said, "You'll attract more flies with a teaspoon of honey, than a gallon of vinegar". I firmly believe in this. Perhaps the military shouldn't go out and grab all the latest and greatest technology as soon as it's released and instead offer incentive packages for those who have already joined the military. The nearly unanamous opinion of the military from those who are enrolled is that it sucks balls and it's only worth it the first four years. It costs more to train a new soldier than it does to keep an current one, however, the pay and benefits, etc for those who have served four years isn't nearly as good as it is for the first term of service.

Either that or put a Dance Dance Revolution machine on free play in some sort of lounge for the men to play. Given the current arcade trends, thousands will flock to it.

Btw, I was ready for that one.
