Are you aware you have PTSD?

I was listening to a podcast about it. It used to be called Shell Shock (WWI), and before that "Soldier's Heart" (Civil War).

Anybody want to list the symptoms?

For me it is being startled awake in bed while in a deep sleep. I wake up in a panic. It's a fight or flight. Basic emotions.

I work though it when I have to. Once I knew what is was I learned to deal with it. James your post inflect that it is not a problem. It is a problem and it can be dealt with.

I've never encountered real PTSD. I've interviewed plenty of posers trying for a free ride.

Most of the fat girls I know are simply alcoholics.

My father used to beat me every day during PTSD Awareness Month. He said it was the only way I would learn what it meant to have PTSD. He was right. It took me years to get over the sights and sounds and feelings of that raw lamb shank--that's what he beat me with, raw lamb shank--hitting my uncomprehending flesh.

But I finally did. With years of counseling, I was able to move on from that hurtful memory. I have remained fine ever since, largely because nobody knows when PTSD Awareness month is, so no one ever mentions it.

Until now. Out of the blue, there it was, right there on Lit. "June is PTSD awareness month." Like a shot--really, more like a wet slab--it brought it all back.

You're reversed years of psychotherapy and animal activism.

I hope you're happy.

Some jerk playing "blame the victim of paternal lamb-shank beatings" in 5...4...3...2...

:(

So friggin' true for so many of you.

Your ":(", stunted ego called:

It said to thank God for endless pot...

...so it'll always have at least one excuse to never grow up and deal with reality.

I'm pretty certain I have it, but I keep moving forward.

Me too. It's scary in the moment of awakening. Like, wtf just happened?

I'm sure your father loved you the best he knew how...

The following info on PTSD is cut and paste:

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a type of anxiety disorder. It can occur after you have gone through an extreme emotional trauma that involved the threat of injury or death.
Causes, incidence, and risk factors

Doctors do not know why traumatic events cause PTSD in some people but not in others. Your genes, emotions, and family setting may all play roles. Past emotional trauma may increase your risk of PTSD after a recent traumatic event.

With PTSD the body's response to a stressful event is changed. Normally, after the event the body recovers. The stress hormones and chemicals the body releases due to the stress go back to normal levels. For some reason in a person with PTSD the body keeps releasing the stress hormones and chemicals.

PTSD can occur at any age. It can occur after events such as:

Assault
Car accidents
Domestic abuse
Natural disasters
Prison stay
Rape
Terrorism
War

Symptoms

There are three types of PTSD symptoms:

1. Reliving the event, which disturbs day-to-day activity

Flashback episodes in which the event seems to be happening again and again
Repeated upsetting memories of the event
Repeated nightmares of the event
Strong, uncomfortable reactions to situations that remind you of the event

2. Avoidance

Emotional numbing or feeling as though you do not care about anything
Feeling detached
Not able to remember important parts of the event
Not interested in normal activities
Showing less of your moods
Avoiding places, people, or thoughts that remind you of the event
Feeling like you have no future

3. Hyperarousal

Always scanning your surroundings for signs of danger (hypervigilance)
Not able to concentrate
Startling easily
Feeling irritable or having outbursts of anger
Trouble falling or staying asleep

You may feel guilt about the event, including survivor guilt.

You may also have symptoms of anxiety, stress, and tension:

Agitation or excitability
Dizziness
Fainting
Feeling your heart beat in your chest
Headache

today, for the first time ever, i told someone in my offline life who wasn't a sexual partner that i'd had ptsd. and brisquely continued with the conversation, leaving no space for her to ask details. it felt frickin' weird!

is there still a stigma/shame thing, for you?

Uh, yes doctors do know why experience affects people differently. Plenty of folks growup in Candyass Paradise with plastic trophies and group hugs and never is heard a discouraging word and the skies are not cloudy all day. And some people growup in a world of shit where every breath is a struggle. The first group cant handle life, the 2nd group think they died and went to heaven cuz now they got a gun to fight back with.
