I just read an interesting article. With the 5th General Election in 10 years underway in Israel, most of us know what the main issue is.
But what is shocking is that the growing poverty in the country isn't even on the agenda for the major parties.
Israel is in the midst of its worst economic crisis and this issue is completely absent from the debate.
1,169,000 Israelis live under the poverty line (out of ca. 6 million)
Unemployment is at 10% and growing.
Inflation is at 8% and growing.
Wages are down 4.5% and falling.
The 2003 budget includes further cuts of 12% in social projects.
The richest 10% of Israelis earn 20 times more than the poorest 10%. In the Western world, this sad statistic places Israel in 2nd place regarding financial inequality, second only to the USA.
Israel was once a symbol of solidarity and, in the past, often spoke optimistically of becoming a welfare state on par with European countries.
Now she is in ruins. A shame, really.
