Ye gods; it's stopped raining!

I managed to mow the back lawn. Perhaps it will dry out now I have trimmed the long grass.

Grr! I have just tried to apply to renew my driving licence - required because of my advanced age. I went through most of the procedure online only to be told I have to send a new photo because my passport photo is more than 5 years old.

BUT - to renew, you have to create a Government Gateway ID. If you abort the procedure, you don't get the ID. So I had to complete the application, knowing it will fail, AND send an application by post with a new passport-size photo, before getting my Government ID.

WTF do I need a Government ID? They have my unique Driving Licence Number, my unique National Insurance Number, my unique National Health Service Number AND my still-valid wartime Identity Number. So now I have a fifth unique ID.

Are they cross-referenced?

No.

Edited to add: And a unique Passport Number.

Nation may speak Peace to Nation, but Governmental computer systems do not talk to one another; or not in the same language.

I saw Captain America do that in a movie...

That was a weird scene. Chris Evans is playing a super soldier with super strength, and yet when he punches that bag it barely moves, even though he hit is hard enough to knock it off the chain. Then he hangs up a new one (without taking down the old chain that should have still been hanging there), and resumes punching a bag that hardly moves when hit.

Yet I am a regular human (albeit a bit larger than Evans), and when I punch an 80 pound punching bag, it going swinging all over the place, and I have to chase it down to hit a second and third time.

There is some trickery going on there.

ISBN Mismatch

I have just ended an eBay dispute with a bookseller.

I wanted the 2 Volume Oxford Shorter Dictionary on Historical Principals. This supplier was the third one on eBay this year to send me Volume 2 only.

Apparently the problem is eBay's software. As soon as the seller enters the description it generates the ISBN. But the ISBN is identical for both volumes so eBay lists it as a '2-volume set' whether it is or isn't. When the seller receives my order, they send what they had - only the one volume. They can't list it as a single volume. eBay won't let them!

[Expletives deleted] eBay!

PS. According to my female friends eBay has another default setting. If they sell underwear such as waist slips, they can only list it as 'New' or 'New with defects'. They are not allowed to state 'Used'.

Some ladies I know used to sell their used panties on eBay. Apparently there was quite a fetishist demand for them, until eBay shut such sales down.

I file this under a joint heading of "suspension of disbelief" and "lack of knowledge of how such things really work." ;) Also, I could tell myself that Cap is landing very sharp, focused punches, hence the bag doesn't go flying all over.

I'm sure if I myself hit such a bag, I'd be the one flying back due to recoil or something.

Amen to that. For me, all of that 'super-hero stuff is just that. But I'll probably watch it when is arrives on my TV. Have you noticed that Thor doesn't know how to hold his hammer (in the stills, anyway).

Sharp, focussed punches ? Bit of an oriental ring to it, I think

:D

They still get sold, but they have to have been 'washed' to meet eBay's criteria - and stated as 'New' or 'New with defects'. :D

Why the hell did I think it was a good idea to correct quizzes with PMS? I am raging over the freaking cheating! Google Translate was the WORST IDEA EVER! No need to learn anything. YOu can just look it up and get something that's WRONG.

Thank god for red wine.

But Thor is a near-god, and so can hold his hammer however he likes. ;) Actually no, I hadn't noticed.

But you're talking to someone who adores "Pacific Rim" which I'm sure is rife with continuity, plausibility, etc., issues. But I LOVE that movie. Suspend disbelief? What disbelief? :)

Honestly, the punching bag scene is the only part of Avengers that bothers me. I love the rest of the movie to the point it is one of my all time favorites, if not my very favorite movie ever made, except the way the punching bag reacts when hit ;)

My favorite movie is "Dark City," but "Avengers" is one of my favorite movies to just toss in when I need something amusing. Also, a different kind of amusing, "Pacific Rim." They are my go-to movies.

Dark City was the first DVD I ever bought even before I had a player for it.

Haven't seen Pacific Rim yet.

Still need to see Thor: Dark World. Looking forward to the new Captain America movie.

I have money again! I got paid up through December, and could technically pay off my car loan right here and now, but I am going to wait and see if I get back to work when I am supposed to before jumping in like that.
