I happened to see the news of this on Fox news through China's video streaming site Bilibili.com. I think there is one point all of our American or British friends above haven't made clear or fully understood so far.

It is not how old the kid is or how vulnerable he is or what his future looks like, but that he might endanger other people or even take the lives of them, because young or childish or whatever as he is, it is very possible he be equipped with the weapon that is powerful enough to kill.

When the consequence is very dangerous, it is necessary to take actions to prevent it from taking place. Doesn't it make sense?

The officer who made the arrest made a similar statement along the lines of, it doesn't matter what age you are if you pull the trigger, people die. I'm all for getting tough on guns. I'm all for preventing violence.

The thing is, within minutes the police became aware there was no credible threat to any school. They made an example of this ten year old latinx kid based on messages he'd sent, not on the actual threat of violence.

When the consequence is very dangerous, it is necessary to take actions to prevent it from taking place. Doesn't it make sense?

In my opinion, and in the opinion of some judicial authorities, criminalising a child has consequences, both for the child and society. See this article puts it better than I can. He was too young to be criminally responsible in the first place, but that aside, there were far better ways to reprimand and reform his behaviour that imprisoning him.
