Ten year old jailed for 21 days for mucking about with his mate? What? Link

Police and courts have time for this?

He threatened to shoot up a school. You can sort of see why the dibble might be a bit over cautious.

Yes! They should absolutely follow up any reports like that incase they're a genuine risk to kids but he wasn't a threat šŸ˜£ at all. The judge said it didn't matter, the words alone were enough.

The words are enough. The sentence is appropriate. Hopefully he learns from this and isnā€™t stupid enough to do this again.

Stuff like this makes me want to say stop this rock I want off.

Days ago cops stood outside a school while children were dying. Now they're policing children's picture messages while the gun lobby spouts worse aaaallll over social media and gets away with it.

Is there any wonder people lose respect for the law? Take it into their own hands at times?

He made a bad decision, but in no way did he endanger anyone, he gets 21 days.

A full grown adult gets 48 hours for DUI, ie. making a bad decision that puts lives at risk. 28 people a day die in DUI "accidents". Why the double standard?

Is the kid of sound mind? Iā€™m not trying to be a cunt, but itā€™s a bit of a worry that a 10 year old would even think to joke about mass murder and assault rifles, let alone try to be ā€œcoolā€ and text other kids about it. Pretty sure I was thinking about My Little Pony when I was 10.

Play stupid games win stupid prizes.

Do you work in a school? Are you a teacher who worries about the safety of their students every day? Have you done run, hide, fight drills with fourth graders? I have. Itā€™s the stuff of nightmares. We had a middle school kid (age 12) bring in C4 in his backpack. C4! He was expelled. There is no room to not take threats seriously. The Texas shooter actually told someone he was about to do it and she didnā€™t call authorities because she didnā€™t think he would actually do it. Imagine living with the repercussions of not taking it seriously.

I still played with Barbies when I was 13. Kids grow up so much faster than we did. :(

I agree. The DUI driver deserves a much harsher consequence.

Instead of taking this as a personal attack or an attack on your profession, perhaps do a quick risk assessment in your head.

Was there a risk in this case?
No.
Is this child more dangerous than a drunk driver?
No.
Then why treat him like a felon for making a questionable joke?
Because of things other people have done for which this child should carry not one ounce of blame!

The driver deserves a proper sentence.
The kid should be held accountable, but a custodial sentence is ridiculous. What about restorative justice? Community service? Education about internet safety? Any-fucking-thing-but-prison-at-the-age-of-ten...

And do I need to say it? Race surely had a part to play in how this CHILD has been treated.

If someone text you that they were going to go shoot up a school Iā€™d take that seriously, no matter what the age.

I wouldnā€™t be surprised if heā€™s being assessed. Comparing mass murder investigation to a DUI? Itā€™s a bit apples oranges

Yep. And then drop it if I realised they were joking.

I think he'll need more than an assessment after the youth offenders system is through with him

It's not a case of mass murder, it's a massive waste of resources and it protects no-one. Comparing a joke to a threat is apples and oranges in my humble opinion x

Thatā€™s the thing. It wouldnā€™t just be dropped. Just because you think it should be, doesnā€™t mean it will be lol. That is a very immature, very naive train of thought youā€™ve got going on there.

Theyā€™d have to investigate. If they didnā€™t and something happened, then what? Itā€™s a no-brainer.

Heā€™ll need to be assessed for his own safety, for one.

You think itā€™s a waste of resources. In your opinion itā€™s a waste of resources.

You can joke and be as unfunny as you like, but as I said, you may win unfunny prizes.

People complain when they arenā€™t thorough, people complain where they are.

Investigate... Find out it's a kid with no guns who messaged his friend. Logically what's next? In these days where resources are scarce, WTF

There has been zero regard for his safety or wellbeing

Yes. I am entitled to share that opinion, you don't have to agree.

For the record, as an adult I expect to be held accountable for my actions and words and the harm they might do.

Who are these people? I am regularly threatened with violence in my line of work (healthcare) I have been hit, spat at, shoved, fucking tickled at work.

Bless the highly professional police who've attended those incidents to de-escalate the situation and calm things down.

Fuck the bullies who make headlines out of blameless children.

You debate like a toddler and I'm naĆÆve?

Listen, when the police perpetrate injustice on a child it is at their discretion. At any point they could assess the risk and drop it. They did not. If you think their reasons were noble, you're the one who's being naĆÆve.

Itā€™s not a debate. You just donā€™t want to hear it. No idea why youā€™re calling me names and getting emotional.

Some advice. Perhaps refrain from using describing words like ā€œtoddlerā€ when you start a thread called ā€œIs this shit for real?ā€ and then do nowt but complain the whole thread because you donā€™t receive the reactions you like. You know. Like a toddler throwing toys out the cot.

Just saying.

Erm... It is. People have made some valid points and rebuttals ergo, debate
You just donā€™t want to hear it.
Au contraire, if I didn't want to hear it I'd use the ignore feature
No idea why youā€™re calling me names and getting emotional.
I called you no names. I stated a fact.

We call them adjectives

I co-slept with all my kids
Just saying.
Right. You could make at least one good point before you flounce off. Maybe share an opinion based on facts? You know... Like in a debate? šŸ˜‰

Newbie thinks their opinions are facts. Thatā€™s cute.

Bring on the meltdown in 3..2..1..
I doubt it. I come here for entertainment when I'm bored, doesn't seem as though anyone else is as bothered by the police SNAFU. The only thing I resent is your failure to back up your opinions with a single fact.
