I don't know how common it is, but you hear it in porn, and some of the gay shows that I've seen. On occassion it's mentioned in some of the stories on this site. Most likely they are using the reference to let you know they are the woman, but I could be wrong, I don't often talk sex with gay men. No, not strange at all. Lately I've been hearing those descriptions more often than before. At least in my circle of friends, who are mostly very masculine, macho daddy bear types. It is funny to hear these guys use those terms, though. I don't think it effeminizes, or ridicules at all.
