in june of 08 a large part of my family went to ireland. we spent 10 days touring and it wasnt nearly enough time. i am only 75% irish (unfortunately), but i have to tell you, in the short time i was there i met some incredible people. they made me feel right at home, as if i was part of the family. we spent some time in a town called doolin, and let me tell you, it was hard to leave. what an incredible island you have! rolling hills, winding roads, stone walls and around every bend in the road there was history. the cliffs of mohr, the rock of cashel, bunratty, and an old abbey whose name i cant seem to recall. there are many incredible sights here in america but none of them inspire the awe i felt when i gazed upon these wonders. they might seem like tourist sights to you but to me they represented an enduring history of an incredible culture. a people as quick to smile as they are to anger. a people who laugh, love, cry all with equal zeal. a strong, proud people.
our last night was spent in dublin. in a bar near a golf course i believe. they had a restaraunt on one side and on the other was a bar. we went in and there were some older folks in there. they were singing. no jukebox, no multiple tvs, just old friends having drinks and singing songs. amazing. in america a pub like that would have gone out of buissness in a month. they greeted us warmly and half and hour later they were treating us like we had lived there all our lives. i will never forget the warmth and sense of belonging they instilled in us. i will never forget them. when we flew out the next morning i felt as if i had left some part of me behind and ever since i have longed to return.
