Other than buying a nifty pair of headphones, is there any other ways to improve the sound from my ipod?

I got rid of all my old equipment and only use the ipod to listen to music. I want to know if there is anyway to amplify the sound without spending a ton of money.

If you are looking for hi fidelity on an Ipod, forget it. The first problem is that the AAC format is a so called "lossy compression" format, and in doing so, you lose fidelity (other formats, like OGG, don't have that problem, but MP3 definitely does). To be able to fit thousands of tunes on an iPad they compress the hell out of the audio files and stuff gets lost in the translation.

The other problem is that the iphone/ipad and other devices have pretty crappy digital to audio converters (the things that take the digitized sound and turn it into real audio before it gets amplified, the headphones are a speaker that actually vibrates, hence the need to convert it). The first device is one of many that bypasses the internal dac on the ipod to make it work better.

You can also change the bit rate on the AAC tracks you use on the Iphone, I believe that setting is done on the Itunes on the host computer. The higher the bit rate, the better the quality, but the more memory it will take up.......

The other link is software to make the sound tailored to the headphones you are using.

Only good news is with memory sized exploding (though Apple still makes you pay way too much for every gig), they hopefully one day will use something better then AAC. There is a digital download format they use on some classical music websites that is amazingly clear, better then CD sound.

As a long term audiophile I am appalled by the amount of people who only listen to music on an ipod or the like. I bought one to use when I jog and I figured the sound couldn't be too good, but I never dreamed it was as bad as it is. My god, it reminds me of old transistor radios back in the sixties. Dating myself I know. I bought some headphones rather than those awful earbuds, but still the sound is horrendous. I am a musician so maybe I'm fussier than most.
It is just sad that what the artist wanted people to hear is being missed.
Give me a room full of audio equipment.
