India

Likely not, and even if there were, after reading your "slut wife" post in Talk, it's doubtful any experienced person would respond to you.

So I'm just gonna hijack this guys thread because of the title then let it slowly fade away.

Today was the holiday of Holi in India. It marks the beginning of Spring. It is known as the festival of colors

Holi is one of the good things about India.

Rape is one of the bad things about India.

I enjoyed the week I spent there a few months ago, but I don't intend to go back anytime soon. It's going to take a generation to fix India's rape culture. Until they can raise boys who don't think it's okay to use women in that way, I don't think I'll be visiting India again.

As for Holi, those interested in a somewhat similar experience here in the States should sign up for one of next year's Color Runs.

I never heard of the color runs before, thank you JM! I see the one nearest to me (Baltimore) is sold out, I will have to go for next year, as you suggested!

I love Scentofawoman's picture with the piles of colors for sale. I have several friends in India and they always have such awesome Holi pictures. :)

You're welcome, Etoile. The color runs are a blast! They sell out quickly, so try to sign up as soon as registration opens for whichever city you want. Here's how to find out:

You don't get the big picture.

Indias whole society is based upon a caste system. It is based upon the belief that there are humans who are worth more and humans who are worth less. Fixing this will take at least three more generations and then...then we can start with "women are humans, too". Prenatal tests have been made illegal to prevent gender-based abortion of daughters - mothers don't want female children, they have no worth. And you think you can fix this by teaching boys to treat women nicely?

It's true, sex selection and murdering your son's new wife for dowry money are illegal, technically, as is rape. The caste system doesn't limit anyone legally - except that it does in reality. Enforcement of the law might be a good entry point into - well not winding up like China with 1 girl to 9 boys or whatever it is. "Women are humans too" is actually healthier for every economy and every culture it's introduced into. (In the case of India it's not new news at all, it's just not lived up to.)

I think it's going to take at least 2 or 3 generations to get women's liberation. Yes In looking at the big picture of Rape, dowry, caste, poverty, and abuse India is a seething mess to Western eyes. But one really has to look at what this Generation has accomplished over the last. The call centers brought a lot of opportunities for women that they would not have had. Of my cousins, several have had love marriages and most of their kids are going to college. Educated women are starting to stand up and own homes and stay single longer. As Western culture invades women are starting to take notice.

I lived in India for a couple of years in the late 60s. I learned more about the morality of man in a month in India than in all the years I lived preceding my visit. I went their a stupid, naive American and was taught humility, the love of man and the value of traditon. I made no changes to great Lady India but she changed me forever in the most positive of ways.

I lived in rural Southern India.
