Welcome to Lit. Just jump in and interact on threads that interest you. The BDSM board doesn't move very fast, but generally folks are friendly and won't bite without consent.
The playground has lots to offer, but sometimes it moves too fast for new folks to get their footing.
Unless you really enjoy ugly trolling or picking fights, maybe avoid the politics board. The general board has a reputation for being a little rough too.
How to and Fet have special interest threads for any topic you can think of.
If you are a writer, the Author's board is highly recommended and if you have a poet's heart, check out the poetry forum.

I expected better manners of a southern boy.
