They say the early bird catches the worm, but night owls may be missing far more than just a tasty snack. Researchers have discovered the first physical evidence of structural brain differences that distinguish early risers from people who like to stay up late. The differences might help to explain why night owls seem to be at greater risk of depression.

Previous studies have suggested that night owls experience worse sleep, more tiredness during the day and consume greater amounts of tobacco and alcohol. This has prompted some to suggest that they are suffering from a form of chronic jet lag.
i'm an early bird. too damn early, actually.

what are you?

I don't suppose "they" considered that God or the Supreme Alien programed some of us to stay up late and some to rise early to keep the tigers from eating all of us.

i've always been a night owl. i only woke up early, because the dog wanted to go out, and i went to bed very early. the last few days have been off. when it's just me on my own clock, i sleep late and can go even later. it hasn't been my own clock for quite some time. i have adjusted. kind of. i watched the sun rise this morning. i used to only watch the sunrise when i stayed up all night.

I rarely sleep straight through the night. My sleep pattern revolves around a series of cat naps. After about a week I finally crash.

Staying up to see the sun rise is still one of my favorite things. I only get to do it in the summer. I'm still a night owl though. I'm up until 2-3 AM, when I fall asleep on the couch and eventually wake up enough to go to bed until 8:30ish.

I sleep 6-7 hours a night but I also take an hour and a half snooze about 4:30-5PM. I go to bed about now....12Am and get up at 7AM.

The siesta is what keeps me going otherwise I'd be crashing by 8:30-9PM.

Yeah, I usually crash between 1 and 3am myself, but I find myself wide awake by 6am, 7 at the latest. Sometimes I take a nap, but most often I just drag ass through the day.

i have a reply all set somewhere, with fancy information, but sleep just smacked my upside my head. my pillow and blankets are calling. the sunrise was totally worth it.

I've been a night owl since childhood. I inherited that from my Mom, and she from her parents. I have a solid pedigree.

I like the quiet, and the dark. I like looking at the Moon and the stars. I like the city at night, and sunrise over the bay.

If I have to deal with an occasional bout of depression, and a craving for a shot of alcohol now and then, it's worth it.

I stay up late, because I work late. When I have a week off, I stay up even later, until 2 or 3 in the morning, but am up at 8. Grab a nap in the afternoon, and I'm good.

I'm nocturnal, have been most of my life, and I never take caffeine.

What's a sunrise?

Well late nights are a family trait but my sleeplessness is something I acquired five years ago. I know where mine comes from just don't know how to fix it... Yet.

I'm a morning person. Get up at 4:30 for work and love getting shit done before the sun's up. Also like the solitude and peacefulness at that time of day before most folks are up. G'nite.

I have always known my brain was faulty. ;)

I now rarely drink alcohol (can't be bothered and I sleep badly enough as it is.)

I haven't smoked in over 15 years and only smoked 1 or 2 a day.

I don't drink coffee or caffeine drinks.

When everyone else is sleeping it is quiet and no one is bothered by my tap tap tapping as I write.

Most days, I go to bed around 11pm.
But I have always been an early riser - up between 4-30 and 5am.
About three to four nights every two months or so, I get an insomnia episode, and then I rarely get more than 2 hours sleep a night.
Even as a child, I couldn't do the 8 hours recommended.

I haven't had 8 straight hours since I was about 11.

I am a very light sleeper. My cat can scratch at my door and it wakes me up. It was great when I had my babies. I have never had a problem hearing them when they were crying or even stirring. :D

My GP says that I am a chronic insomniac and there is no apparent reason why apart from the fact that I have a brain that is overly busy. I've tried meditation, hypnosis, sleep hygiene, herbal products, (St. John’s wort, chamomile, valerian) exercise, sleep restriction, stimulus control therapy, antihistamines ...

Sleeping tablets have been prescribed but I do not like them at all. So I don't use them.

Luckily I don't suffer some of the things that can happen to chronic insomniacs such as depression, poor immune system etc

I do get migraines but those are fairly rare.
