Supposedly the 10 people in the story were on Nigger Island, so named because a rock on the island resembled a Negro's head. When Christie was informed the title was too controversial she changed it to "Ten Little Indians" which was still too controversial. The final title became "And Then There Were None." I was amazed to see even in the 70's the stage play was still being ran with the original title.
