Idea's for dvd's to buy

hehe  thank you

i looked for god father trilogy on ebay but they didn't have it ... hmm crouching tiger hidden dragon for £4.99 ... its £2 for postage though ... do i have to include that in my bid or do i just bid at £4.99

Bid what you want to pay for the movie. Shipping is extra. And always check out the shipping costs before you bid. A lot of auctions inflate their prices by overcharging on the shipping.

I really enjoyed My Big Fat Greek Wedding, but it seems awfully insubstantial in retrospect.
To me, it was sort of like watching a good TV comedy. You laugh at it while it's on, but it doesn't really stay with you for long, and I suspect that if I watched it again, I wouldn't find it very interesting.

that is what my sister said when she saw it ... its worth watching and was really funny ... but

so the but makes me think i'll maybe watch it before buying it unless i see it at a good price

ok thanks mischka ... by way if i get addicted to buying dvd's over ebay im blaming caroline :)

I think you can now search specifically for items being offered in the UK, so that might save you some on shipping. The cost of shipping is listed on the auction page. Mischka is right, you have to be careful, but if you keep your eyes open you can find real bargains.
What I do is look at Items that are ending soon, and finding things I want that have for one reason or another, not gotten a lot of bids. But the nature of EBay is that you never know what you will find, and sometimes what you really want will never come up for sale.

first off i'll say im very fussy about what dvd's i actually buy :)

but here's dvd's i've bought and really enjoy ... to give you an idea of my tastes :

apocalypse now redux
citizen kane
dog soldiers
fear and loathing in las vegas - criterion collection edition (just ordered this)
matrix
the lord of the rings extended
the third man
waking ned

Not much help here, no common thread. Except maybe the fantasy theme.

That's fine, just so long as I get some credit when you find a bargain on something really good.:)

FOR THE RECORD

My Big Fat Greek Wedding was friggin hilarious, especially if you ARE greek, because you see a splitting image of your family on the screen. I know i sure as hell did. Pretty much everything, aside from the Windex, is the way my family acts. How scary...

The tv show, on the other hand, is just terrible...it takes things too far, although, there is this one line...the father says to the son in law

"While the greeks were building the Acropolis, your people we're banging together two rocks".

My father has said that to both my brother in law AND my best friend...so scary.

if you want comedy, look into Time Bandits, Brazil and Amazon Women on the Moon.

The new Masterworks edition of 'Ran' is coming out soon and its a must-own film.

Also, Criterion is putting out a double DVD set of films by Brakhage that I want to pick up at some point soon.

Rushmore is one to own for simple rewatchability. Its funny over and over, or jsut groove to the music and snooze out.

Good to see ya Sexy-girl. That avatar is simply unfair.

Dr Strangelove (or how I learnt to stop worrying and love the bomd) - absolute classic

or Raging Bull
Angel heart
the hustler
devils advocate
Rollerball (original not the remake)

all fantastic movies I could watch tons of times

i chickened out of the e bay thing for now :) i'll look into it more over weekend

congrats to MM for picking two films i have never heard of :) ... actually ran looks very interesting and i like films like that a lot ... i couldn't see when its due out though on amazon.co.uk :(

i've never seen rushmore ... not sure if it would be my type of comedy or not i'd have to watch it before buying i think :)

not sure about my av being unfair but good to see you too :)

im pretty sure im going to buy dr strangelove for sure eventually but im not sure if it will be next

I try to buy DVD's which are great movies that look great. If I already have it on tape and it's a great film but isn't that visually interesting I can be happy with it on tape - at least that is the theory.
Brazil
Manhunter
Lawrence of Arabia
Little Shop of Horror
The Producers (nicest looking version of the film I have seen)
Touch of Evil
Yojimbo (my favorite Kurosawa film)
Spartacus
The Ruling Class (I just don't want to pay for it)
The Abyss
Amelie
The Lion in Winter
The American Friend
Blade Runner (unfortunately the Director's cut without the narration - I liked the narration)
The Alec Guiness Collection
Vertigo
Road Warrior
Batman Returns
Beetlejuice
The City of Lost Children
Empire of the Sun
Ladyhawke
Amarcord
Manchurian Candidate
Morgan
Sunset Boulevard
Jules and Jim
A. I.
The Third Man
Stormy Monday
Singing in the Rain
An American in Paris
The Bicycle Thief
The Usual Suspects
La Femme Nikita
Thief
La Strada
Body Heat
Sweet Smell of Success
Inherit the Wind
Casablanca
The Man Who Would Be King
Wizard of Oz
Suddenly, Last Summer
The Party
Twelve Angry Men
Men in Black (#1 only)
Rocky Horror
West Side Story
Amadeus
The Searchers

In the future I would like to see:
The Conformist
Bad Day at Black Rock
Star Wars (the original)
Raiders of the Lost Ark (the first)

That should get you started

This movie was such a wonderful surprise. It embraces conventions, twists 'em a bit, but doesnt lurch into post-irony bullshit that other horror films do.

And, well, Third Man is kick-ass.

Get yourself Drugstore Cowboy just because it will keep you grounded those late afternoon spoiled days when a little reassurance is sought in the form of constructive nihilism.
