My ICQ number has seven digits and begins with 264. I got it at the end of March of the year they were introduced (at the beginning of Feb, 1995 [1996?] if i remember correctly). I am still in touch with a couple people who got their numbers at the same time i did. (We were residents of what were *MUCH* smaller Yahoo communities back then.) I've had ICQ non-stop for these years, sometimes using it a lot and sometimes allowing it to lie fallow.

I prefer ICQ to MSN messenger, which i also have, because ICQ has that wonderful history feature.

Just rambling.
I saw a post on another thread in which the poster had all his contact info - ICQ numbers, MSN info, all of it - in his sig block and it got me to thinking a bit about the ways in which we communicate with each other - and how long they've been around.

ICQ was such a startlingly new thing when it appeared.

Real time chat rooms were so incredibly new when they sprang up from nowhere.

And the MUD/MUSH/MOO kinda play - well that was way cool new stuff when it showed up, too.

I bet people felt like this about phones when they began to make their way into private households.

Technology is wonderful.

Now i have to go unpack some boxes cuz the good fairy isn't, apparently, going to do it while i sleep.

AIM is da only way to go - at least with AIM I can keep my buddy list where ever I go. I like to get on AIM from work and home, so it's perfect.

ICQ is just good as an answering machine service. "If I am not reachable, just send me an ICQ message and I'll get it when I get home."

I only use msn messenger for chat...once in a blue moon I will use yahoo.

I used to have an ICQ number but there was only one person I used it with...and I haven't used it in sooooooo long that I have no idea what it was!

I'm a traditionalist, I like yahoo for sentimental reasons

Please remember everytime you use technology, there was always some more jerk who designed it and another who built it.

(This was an unpaid endorsement of technologists everywhere)

Mine starts with 615... can't say that I ever use it though, it makes me batty. I only use one IM service, and even then, rarely at all unless I'm trying to get a hold of Juspar or Chef.

With the new ICQ you can also have your list at several locations, since it now uploads it to one of their servers. I like that quite a bit.

I Seek You --> ICQ

One advantage with ICQ is that you can leave messages for someone offline (whereas MSN requires email)

But, I use to have a problem with lengthy chats with ICQ ... window filling up with weird characters ... crashing. MSN seems to have more capacity.

Cym, you can save MSN chats, too (like history on ICQ) ... then there's always the select all, copy, and paste into something like a new email document to save chats, too. Always nice to go back and reread some of those memorable ones, eh?

I guess preference really depends on who is on what list.

Sell you your number for $5........:D

Mine is 11682290 I got it early in '98 and have been a faithfull user every since. AIM was a joke to me at the time....powow was too advanced.....everybody I knew was using it and so i did as well...

Am i crazy or did someone come up with a way to link several chat programs together? So you being adn ICQ user could add a MSN user to your list and chat as if that person were on ICQ?

I have icq, aol, yahoo and msn.

I prefer msn in that it is much more user friendly for me than icq.

Icq brings me endless traffic and I don't feel as though I am truly able to engage in a meaningful conversation with someone. The answering machine aspect is nice though.

AOL, I only use it with people have nothing else. I really don't have an opinion either way.

Yahoo, I use as often as icq. Yahoo has sentimental value in that the personal ads were very fruitful for me. And, with yahoo personals, you can do a regional search thereby saving yourself the frustration of trying to build a freindship with someone halfway around the world.

And there is my two cents~!

As with anything, hi tech communication is really a matter of personal choice.

ICQ and stuff

I've always used ICQ, but use Yahoo for voice chats.

My icq number starts as 665 and I got it in March 2000 (I think).

ICQ is a little more complicated to use, but I'm so used to it now, I don't pay much attention to the setup.

I have ICQ but I very rarely turn it on. Yahoo was the first IM I had and I use it almost all the time. Yahoo is where I talk with my family and my racing buds. I have MSN and it's usually on. I have the same id here and with MSN.

Actually, with ICQ Lite, you can do the same thing. All you need to do is remember your ICQ number and password and you can open a java-based window and you ICQ contact list is there, at least with the new 2001b version. I'm not sure how it works with 2000b, but it's pretty damn slick with 2001. I can go to anyone's pc and as long as there's net access, I can pop up my ICQ and chat to all my contacts. :)

Aha! I will take it under consideration, but only if I get a dollar for every lusty, "wanna fuck" pm I get!

I only ever use ICQ. I've had it for ages...my number's 6 digits with 703 as the first three. I don't like that they've implemented the 'save your contacts' like AIM. That's one of the reasons I don't like AIM - my list would be housed on their server...I guess I just don't like the idea of them knowing exactly who I'm talking to. Course, now ICQ does it without giving you the option of them not doing it. That's annoying, but what can you expect from AOL?

I have MSN, Yahoo, AOL, and ICQ. I never use AOL, and don't know why I keep it installed on my computer. <shrug> I use Yahoo and MSN for just the people that don't have ICQ. I keep ICQ on constantly, and am almost always chatting to someone on it. It was the first IM I had, so I don't find it that difficult to work.

Too bad ICQ stopped making worthwhile versions at 2000a

Hehe.. I got a complaint about everything

Unn.. hypothetically.. if I were to upgrade to the new version of ICQ.. is there a way to transfer my 200+ contact list? I would hate to lose it.

Hal

I have updated my ICQ several times, and never lost my contact list......

I have MSN, ICQ and yahoo. I prefer ICQ. If I want to avoid the nuisance traffic I go n/a which allows me to screen who is trying to contact me. I have a message which says what I am doing. I have upgraded and reinstalled several times and not lost my contact list.
My no starts with 983 and has 7 digits. I'm not sure when I joined up but I think it may have been about Sptember 2000?
