I miss my friends today

I've called a couple already this morning to wish them a Happy New Year and to catch up on their lives. Phone calls are wonderful and I'm glad we can stay caught up but it isn't the same as sitting across from them or going for long walks.

They have all asked me to move closer to where they are, if only they had moved to the same state.

I long to sit with my best friend for a couple of hours. She is more my sister now than she is just a friend. We both remember exactly where we met the first time 13 years ago, what the conversation was, and our first impressions of each other. She knows me like no other and loves me just the same....through all the changes. I remember the joy in her voice when she called me from her hospital room to tell me she'd just had her first baby the night before and that she was in love with her daughter at first sight. I have a box of letters and notes from her that I cherish. Some are short, some are long. Some simply say I love you for who you are.

I talked to my other girlfriend this morning who just recently moved across the country, this past month, with her new husband. She told me how much she missed our Friday movie nights and the long walks we would take in the evenings, exploring the neighborhoods and looking at the houses. I miss those too.

Life keeps changing and there will be new friends and new memories but right now I long for the comfort of the old.

Can't help you there. Hang in there, sis.

Make no mistake about it. Things can only get better from where you are.

It's always hard when the people you grow close to, move away. You just have to make the best out of those occasional phone calls or e-mails. Just remember, even though they might not be with you in a physical sense, you always carry a part of them in your heart, no matter how great the distance is.

They'll always be with you as long as you keep the memories.

New Year's can do that to you. Reflecting on the past, hoping for the future. It comes with the day.

There is nothing wrong with appreciating the old while waiting for the new! Calling them is a great way of keeping the shared memories alive. Maybe you can't live near them, but I bet you have vacation time this year and planning for a visit to old friends would be fun!

Yes, visiting will be fun. I have open invitations at both places. Thankfully, I get along with their husbands as well as I do them.

I took myself out for a nice lunch, bought a new book, and a couple of little things for the kitchen. I feel better.

I was thinking about my favorite note from my best friend while I was eating lunch. It was two pretzels that were glued onto a piece of paper. She drew faces inside the little holes and one looked like it was smiling and the other looked like it was sad. The note simply said...above the sad pretzel... "When you are away" and above the happy pretzel "When we are together". I've had that note for 12 years now and it always makes me laugh.
