We sit around in this great country, free and at liberty. We can do what we want with no interference. We enjoy what most in the world do not. There are many that wish to take all this away from us. We are defended by fine young men and women in the armed forces. Do we take them for granted? look down upon them? make them feel unworthy? Pay them well enough no to be on WIC? Do the "beautiful" people and "intelligencia" turn up their nose to these fine examples of noble people? Who PROTECTS ALL THAT IS WORTH OF PROTECTION?

Here is an article from a proud father of a US Marine!

SEMPER FI!!!!!

My Heart on the Line

By Frank Schaeffer
Tuesday, November 26, 2002; Page A29

Before my son became a Marine, I never thought much about who was defending me. Now when I read of the war on terrorism or the coming conflict in Iraq, it cuts to my heart. When I see a picture of a member of our military who has been killed, I read his or her name very carefully. Sometimes I cry.

In 1999, when the barrel-chested Marine recruiter showed up in dress blues and bedazzled my son John, I did not stand in the way. John was headstrong, and he seemed to understand these stern, clean men with straight backs and flawless uniforms. I did not. I live on the Volvo-driving, higher education-worshiping North Shore of Boston. I write novels for a living. I have never served in the military.

It had been hard enough sending my two older children off to Georgetown and New York University. John's enlisting was unexpected, so deeply unsettling. I did not relish the prospect of answering the question "So where is John going to college?" from the parents who were itching to tell me all about how their son or daughter was going to Harvard. At the private high school John attended, no other students were going into the military.

"But aren't the Marines terribly Southern?" asked one perplexed mother while standing next to me at the brunch following graduation. "What a waste, he was such a good student," said another parent. One parent (a professor at a nearby and rather famous university) spoke up at a school meeting and suggested that the school should "carefully evaluate what went wrong."

When John graduated from three months of boot camp on Parris Island, 3,000 parents and friends were on the parade deck stands. We parents and our Marines not only were of many races but also were representative of many economic classes. Many were poor. Some arrived crammed in the backs of pickups, others by bus. John told me that a lot of parents could not afford the trip.

We in the audience were white and Native American. We were Hispanic, Arab and African American and Asian. We were former Marines wearing the scars of battle, or at least baseball caps emblazoned with battles' names. We were Southern whites from Nashville and skinheads from New Jersey, black kids from Cleveland wearing ghetto rags and white ex-cons with ham-hock forearms defaced by jailhouse tattoos. We would not have been mistaken for the educated and well-heeled parents gathered on the lawns of John's private school a half-year before.

After graduation one new Marine told John, "Before I was a Marine, if I had ever seen you on my block I would've probably killed you just because you were standing there." This was a serious statement from one of John's good friends, an African American ex-gang member from Detroit who, as John said, "would die for me now, just like I'd die for him."

My son has connected me to my country in a way that I was too selfish and insular to experience before. I feel closer to the waitress at our local diner than to some of my oldest friends. She has two sons in the Corps. They are facing the same dangers as my boy. When the guy who fixes my car asks me how John is doing, I know he means it. His younger brother is in the Navy.

Why were I and the other parents at my son's private school so surprised by his choice? During World War II, the sons and daughters of the most powerful and educated families did their bit. If the immorality of the Vietnam War was the only reason those lucky enough to go to college dodged the draft, why did we not encourage our children to volunteer for military service once that war was done?

Have we wealthy and educated Americans all become pacifists? Is the world a safe place? Or have we just gotten used to having somebody else defend us? What is the future of our democracy when the sons and daughters of the janitors at our elite universities are far more likely to be put in harm's way than are any of the students whose dorms their parents clean?

I feel shame because it took my son's joining the Marine Corps to make me take notice of who is defending me. I feel hope because perhaps my son is part of a future "greatest generation." As the storm clouds of war gather, at least I know that I can look the men and women in uniform in the eye. My son is one of them. He is the best I have to offer. He is my heart.

Frank Schaeffer is a writer. His latest book, co-written with his son, Marine Cpl. John Schaeffer, is "Keeping Faith: A Father-Son Story About Love and the United States Marine Corps." He will answer questions about this article in a Live Online discussion at 1 p.m. today at www.washingtonpost.com.

Exactly. We are a nation of FUCKED UP PRIORITIES. My husband left the military because he knew he couldn't raise a family while still active on the salary they paid. We wonder why so many military families are falling apart. It's because they can't afford to eat and the stress on the families is too much.

As for who thanks them....well I took the old mean ass marine who lives across the street and terrorizes the neighborhood to pick up the false teeth he was having repaired since his timing chain broke this morning. Does that count for anything? I could have let the old bastard gum his steak for a week until he got his car fixed. Instead I took him into town. We had a great time getting to know each other, but I also got to hear from his wife about battle wounds and the long term effects of some chemical he was exposed to. It was pretty horrifying that this couple lived in poverty after all they sacrificed for their country. He's still a mean old bastard but he's not nearly as bad after our ride. I guess I'd be pretty bitter and pissed at the world too if I had had my rib cage ripped off by grenades and had my leg torn open by artillary and still only made about 1000.00 a month for two people to live off of.

Well said.

Every day, as I drive home and stop for a light at a major intersection........There is a Vietnam Vet.......in full battle dress.......minus.......TWO legs.......and ONE hand........

Who sticks his ONLY hand out........for a HAND OUT.......

Whenever I see him........I give him $20........in the past, I have given him warm clothing, socks and coats......

I always get a crisp SALUTE and a THANK YOU!

He shouldnt have to be there!

I wish it where manditory that everyone had to serve at least 3 years....... I did my time and served 4. 3 aint asking to much.

but i wasn't a marine...... i couldn't pass the physical...... i couldn't stuff my head in a jar :)

j.k......

Colonel Nathaniel Jessep (Jack Nicholson) in "A few good men":

Son, we live in a world that has walls.
And those walls have to be guarded by men
with guns. Who's gonna do it? You? You,
Lt. Weinberg? I have a greater
responsibility than you can possibly
fathom. You weep for Santiago and you
curse the marines. You have that luxury.
You have the luxury of not knowing what I
know: That Santiago's death, while tragic,
probably saved lives. And my existence,
while grotesque and incomprehensible to
you, saves lives.

You don't want the truth. Because deep
down, in places you don't talk about at
parties, you want me on that wall. You me
there

We use words like honor, code,
loyalty...we use these words as the
backbone to a life spent defending
something. You use 'em as a punchline.

I have neither the time nor the
inclination to explain myself to a man who
rises and sleeps under the blanket of the
very freedom I provide, then questions the
manner in which I provide it. I'd prefer
you just said thank you and went on your
way. Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a
weapon and stand a post. Either way, I
don't give a damn what you think you're
entitled to.

You most certainly did.

I have nothing but respect for our Armed Forces. I was a 5th generation soilder in the Army. Grandfather was in the Navy during WWII. I have ansestors that I can trace back to the Civil War that served and now my Stepson is wanting to join the navy.

ALL HAIL THE FORCES THAT DEFEND THIS COUNTRY

The rest need to get their head out of their ass and take a look around.

Thanks, I was kind of worried.

Someday very soon the need for war and violence will end. We will grow up. We have to, if not, we will destroy ourselves. We have that capability and it won't take much to trigger it's use.

There isn't a nation or an enemy on this planet that has the power to destroy the US, except for one. The US. We can cave in to fear and send out our armies to fight in every little podunk country and our bombers to pound the bricks to rubble and the rubble to dust and still there will be those that do not like us. So what. What can they do to us? September 11th was a tragedy to be sure but exactly how much harm was done? 3000 people died, two buildings were destroyed and one was damaged. Hurricanes and tornadoes do just as much. There isn't an entity on this planet that can bring this country down, so why the war fever and sabre-rattling? Are you that afraid? Of what? 99.99 percent of us will never be victims of terrorists yet we are constantly bombarded with vague warnings of imminent danger. The terrorists got exactly what they wanted. They whisper and we jump. Like the MASH episode where BJ drove Hawkeye mad waiting for the next practical joke, the real joke turned out to be watching Hawkeye meltdown over nothing.

We spend billions on defense and it continues to escalate every year even though our enemies of the past have now become allies. More people will die in this country in the next year due to lack of acces to basic medical care. Yet 7 billion dollars will be spent(wasted) on a "missile defense shield" that will never be needed. Why would a "rogue nation" (read North Korea) spend billions on ballistic missile developement just to commit suicide, when a small nuclear device can be carried in a suitcase?

War is good for business and we are being run by a businessman.

I have the utmost respect for those who serve. I choose not to. When I feel truly threatened I will gladly do my part. Right now I see nothing to be afraid of.

It is not the bee sting that kills one who is allergic to the venom, it is the reaction of the body itself.

Terrorists are nothing.

Rome Fell

Exactly. And Rome was responsible.

Apples and Oranges. The Huns and Barbarians were equal to Rome in it's latter days as far as weaponry and strengths. Sticks and stones were plentiful.
