As of 2p EST, Gale force winds were in contact with the TX coast near the TX/LA border and Tropical Storm force winds were in contact with the southern LA coast.

I turned on msnnbc today, and what do I see? Some fool standing on a jetty taking pictures of the waves coming on from Rita. You'd think that with everything that happened with Katrina, people would learn.

There are times I think a bit of Dawinism needs to be allowed to happen so we can clean up the gene pool.

We're hunkered down now at home. Wind is picking up. Expect rain to start in the next couple of hours. The highways near Houston are now clear. The DOT has brought in tankers to get gasoline to those stranded along the way...and they're getting on up the road. Shelters are full in places like Brenham, Lufkin, Navasota, Nagadotches.

Our metro buses were still working with government officials to move people from south of Houston to points farther north as late as this afternoon. I really think the City of Houston and Harris County officials have done a terrific job. You put 2 million people on just four highways at the same time and there are going to be problems, but they've been working to resolve those problems as soon as they started.

Just north of where I live, Interstate 45 goes from six lanes on each side of the freeway down to two on each. That has been a bottleneck problem for the 23 years I've lived here. When people started leaving, the bottleneck grew and stretched basically all the way back down the freeway to Galveston. Maybe NOW they'll build another bridge across that damned river and keep the freeway widened all the way to Dallas. Just a thought.

But the roads are clear and everyone is getting ready. I'm cooking and cleaning as long as we have power.

Does anyone know of any NO people that moved back? The levy broke again and flooding is happening again (I know, you saw it on the news).

We've heard about stonedfox regarding Texas evacuation, any others?

On a side note, Mt. St. Helens started steaming again today, one year to the day after it started back up last year. The sky is clear as a bell and it's a pretty, yet somewhat ominous sight to behold.
