How to get invited?

I was wondering this as well. Not because I particularly want to be (although I could have had a crack at 'When a man loves a woman') or think I'm at that standard yet - just that there's not a lot of chatter about these until they drop - it's all very hush hush, though i suppose that's to be expected.

How to you get "invited" to this "Invitational" Contests?
I don't know, but my sense is that it's very clique-y, and you're either in the in crowd, or you ain't.

It seems to be the same couple of dozen writers every time, and as far as I can tell 90% or more are LW writers.

Those invitationals are mostly run by Randi, they are by invitation only, and they are fairly selective. I'd suggest if you want to write for any of them, have half a dozen stories in Lit first, and pm Randi and ask about being included - and give her the link to your story submissions so she can check them out. It is selective, she has pretty high standards and there are some categories she may not include. It's not so much the in-crowd - but it is selective, and Randi sets the criteria and the ground rules, so be prepared to chat about it and about what you write. Randi's actually very approachable and helpful - and she does a tremendous amount of editing for people as well.

Disclaimer here: I've written stories now and then for them. It's fun :) - but then I write stories for lots of things. LOL

Not too many of the writers in those invitationals hang out in the AH is why. It's not that it's hush-hush, it's just they don't spend any time on this board.

by the same token, a lot of the events organized here don't get a lot of circulation outside the AH and whatever publicity Laurel gives them. For the ones I organize, I let people here know and I message or email authors in Lit that I know, but thats about the extent of it - its almost word of mouth in many ways.

These are a bit of a clique thing based on name recognition/success as far as I can tell because Randi reached out to me about a couple of them, and I had never really had any interaction with her, but I told her I had no interest, I think one was horror themed, one was LW....TBH I declined the second one because of another author that was part of it I have bad blood with and in the end...they ended up backing out and never entered.

I don't think there's a prize for these, its an author's challenge, but not open to everyone.

I wouldn't take not being invited personally

Yeah, there's no prize. It's like the author organized events you see here in the AH - done for fun. Randi does reach out to people but there's so much volume going thru Lit and so many authors its impossible to track everything. I make the events I organize open because I have a different philosophy - I'm not so much interested in quality as just opening it up for people to have fun. Randi likes to be a little more selective with a focus on good writing and quality stories - so if you think you make the grade and you'd like to write in them, reach out to her and ask about joining in the next one. Like I said, she's very approachable and helpful - but also be aware she has turned people down for various reasons. Thats the "invitational" part of it.

And yeah, as Lovecraft said, there's nothing personal about not being invited. It's tough to stand out on Lit with all the writers we have here, and quite a few good ones too.

I would like to throw my cowboy hat in the ring, if you have any Invitationals coming up this winter and spring.

Late June, July, August, September is the busy for my ERT and SRT, as we are sent all over the country. I'm not always available in those months.

I like to think that I've done a great job in my first year of writing on Lit. Lot of good feedback, of course you have the assclowns that like to 1-bomb stories for jollies.

I've never been invited to any of these events. That's no biggie. I've never been part of the in crowd and I'm not interested in joining it now.

But, I do find it objectionable that the site promotes exclusionary events.

Same here.

And, I know that the argument is that these invitation only events have better writers and better stories than the open ones, but personally, I haven't noticed a significant difference.

I like the open events as I can toss plot bunnies around and if one lands the right way up, I'll write something. If I was invited to a special event, I couldn't be sure I'd come up with a suitable story.

I had a Halloween party and didn’t invite this Randi person. I suppose we’re even.

Everybody likes Chloe. Maybe a little bit less than before now that you’re telling us Randi’s great but we’re not and we all suck and we don’t measure up. But we still like ya. :rose:

It’s another of Lit’s great divides, like LW. Shrug and move on, and remember what Groucho Marx said: “I wouldn’t want to be a member of a club that would have me as a member.”

That was my reason for saying no. Its way too late in life to feel the need to be one of the cool kids.
I've never entered one of the author sponsored contests either, I stick to the occasional site wide contests and only because Blue W's piss off one's detractors. :p

Better is very subjective which is the main reason I say people shouldn't be concerned about not being let in.

On a positive note, I think invitational events have encouraged some authors to write again after periods of inactivity, which is a good thing for readers.

And when I see these events pop up, I assume my invitation got lost in the mail. That prevents the ego from being bruised. :)

Randi usually comes up with ideas for invitational events. She wants them to be a success and puts a lot of work and effort into organizing them. Based on her knowledge and experiences with other writers, she invites those who she feels will help her to that end. Since there are literally thousands of writers on Lit, I wouldn't take it personally if you're not invited.

As Literotica management has said many times, Randi doesn't have an exclusive on organizing events. It takes work but anyone can do it. If you want to be a part of an organized event, put one together.

I didn't take it personally. It was something that had me curious, so of course, I had to ask. LOL.

I didn't know if there was a set of criteria that an author had to meet, that was posted and I missed it.

If you write a story were a guy backs out and doesn’t enter on LW you get called “a cuck wimp” and lose points.

🤣😂😆

That's fair. Sounds like a lot of work. I would never do it but people who feel irked that they aren't invited should consider starting their own writing event.

Everyone gets called a cuck in LW
But if it means anything my last effort there didn't get over a 2.8 so I don't have too many points left to lose.
Yeah, all the baby carrot "anonymous" wannabe's called anyone a cuck that doesn't write a complete BTB story.
My latest Loving Wives submission is sitting at a 3.69.
I've been able to get 3 of the stories that I'd started writing before the season started, published and I'm working on finishing the rest and starting up my 1st Christmas Story.
