How to Delay Automatic Updates

Is there a way to delay automatic updates for Windows? 'Cause usually, my system decides to install Windows updates right when I'm in the middle of something (like a reading a thread, or a story, etc). Not earth shattering in the grande scheme of things, but it's annoying all the same. Any advice? BTW, if/when you reply, please pretend you are speaking to a 5 year old, because that's about my level of tech understanding. Actually....come to think of it, today's five year old's probably have *more* tech understanding than I do.

There is a way to turn them off (I still use XP) and only install the things you want installed and at a time that is useful to you.
I think it is in desktop... any techies care to chime in here?

Control Panel. System and Security. Windows Update. Change Settings.
