A short exchange with someone today prompted me to think about this:
Assuming that you are a masochist, what kind are you? A physical or emotional one? Or a combination of the two? Why do you think so? Do you think you can seperate the two? Or do you need to be one, in order to be the other? Do you think that your history has anything to do with your choices or masochistic bent, again assuming you are a masochist?
On the other side of the coin: You call and toss it.
This is bathroom thinking for me. I'll be in the shower giving this a great deal of thought.
Hold all my calls, please.
Physical for me; eventually the pain triggers an endorphin rush and /that/ is what I enjoy. The pain also increases sensational awareness. I can separate the two and I know it simply because I get NO enjoyment from emotional pain and it is the fastest way to shut down a good experience. Is there a past history that plays into this? A little. I had a shit ton of emotional and verbal abuse growing up. Therefore its a negative association that creates tension that doesn't release easily. I didn't actually discover that I enjoyed pain until I was tattooed for the first time.
Physical pain, on the contrary, does create an oddly calming effect and based on Psychology today, there are theories that some people who have self harm tendencies actually have the opposite reaction to pain that a normal brain does. Instead of creating a stress response, it calms the stress response. Usually it takes about 30 minutes to release endorphins, but for some reason some brains do it faster.
