"stuff" off my desktop and onto my laptop? Such as in My Pictures...pics sent to me and pics I took. Also, how do I delete "stuff" that I would not want my teens to find so that I can give them my desktop?

Thank you!

What kind of storage do device do you have? Copping things over to a thumb drive would be the easiest way, and I would probably resort the desktop just to make sure.

  I have no idea...I am REALLY new to computers...I only know how to google, pay bills send an email, just learned to copy and paste, and started IMing in Sept...

I just know I have pics in My Pictures and My Documents and other things that I want on the laptop I recieved for CHristmas...

I would get a thumb drive for data transfer. You can get them just about anywhere and they are really easy. They plug into your usb port and act like another drive. You can copy right to it and the transfer to your laptop.

Cool, so I just go to BESTBUY and ask for a "thumb drive" and they will know what I am talking about? How expensive?

Yes you can and they arent to bad. It has been a little while since I bought mine but I think you can get a 2 gig for around 65 dollars

Hey Serene...As far as giving your computer to another person... You should at least wipe the drive... If you want to give it to someone who really knows computers then change out the hard drive completely... It's the only way to be perfectly safe :)

If you're not going to completely wipe the hard drive (which might be kind of hard if you're still new to computers), I'd at least suggest running a program which will clear it of your histories, cookies, etc. so they won't be able to tell what websites you've been to, etc.

CC Cleaner is one such program that's free and you find out where to download it by googling it. Obviously you'll also want to hand-delete any adult pics, etc.

Let me know if you need help or have additional questions- pm if you'd rather do it that way.

And congrats on the new laptop!

A simple guide to copy pictures (and other things!) from the computer to a thumb drive, and then removing the pictures from your hard drive.

1. Insert your USB "thumb drive" into your computers USB slot. It's either on the front (if you have a modern computer usually) or in the back.
2. Windows will probably recognize the drive. This will probably take less than 15 seconds.
3. Click on the start button, then click on My Pictures
4. Now you have the "My Pictures" window open. Select all the pictures you want to copy. You can do this by selecting one of them, then holding the CTRL button. It's the button to the down-left on the keyboard, then clicking on the pictures you want to select.
5. Right click on one of the selected pictures, then select COPY
6. Click on the start button, then click on the icon of a computer
7. Here you will have lots of different drives. One of them is your USB thumb drive. You could click on a drive to see the size of it. When you found your drive, right click on it, and select PASTE.
8. The pictures will copy over. This won't take long, probably less than 2 minutes if you have a newer computer (under 4 years old or so).
9. Now go back to the My Pictures folder. Make sure the same pictures as before is selected, then right click and select "Remove". A window will appear, press yes.
10. Right click on the icon that says "Paper Bin" or something like that. Then select "empty paper bin". Press yes on any window appearing.
11. Now you got your pictures over to the USB drive, and the pictures on your hard drive is gone. Yes, you CAN still get the images back from the hard drive, but the chance of someone searching the drive with a special program is slim.
12. Take out the USB drive, then hide it somewhere or something like that. Some DVD players can play pictures using USB, also you could always insert the thumb drive into a computer and watch pictures from it.

I hope everything is as clear as it could be.
