Ok, ignoring the fact that I didn't say the US is not ready for prime time democracy (whatever that is) - that's a pretty low treshold, and that you can't behave like a human being and keep calling people NAMES IN CAPS, here's an answer.

What I actually said was that the US has a collection infrastructure problems when it comes to holding elections. Making them less than optimal, although still valid. I DID say you hold them together, after all.

One being the need for voter registration. The only reason I can think of that warrants voter registration is that there's no public (no, not nessecarily publically available) record of citizens' primary residence. This means you need citizens to go though an extra set of motions that can be both buerocratic, time consuming, contested and confusing in order to finally cast their ballot. Me, I get voting papers in the mail two weeks before election day. I take them to the polling place (or post office for early voting), and that's that.

Another is lack of standards for identification. The debate over voter ID:s are mostly skewed to non-issues, but the bigger problem is that every local legislation can arbitrarily decide what's a valid voter ID and not, no matter if there are other ID's that are prefectly valid as identifications in people's everyday life. SS card? Not. Gun license? Valid. Student ID? Not. Driver's license. Valid. Out-of-state driver's license? Not. Before you start demanding photo ID at the ballot box, it should be unequivocally clear what is an ID and what is not. And if you move from Florida to Arizona, you should not have to re-prove who you are because of a patchwork of local variants of rules and regulations. And ID is an ID is an ID.

Thirdly, I see how routines, methods and rules for holding a vote is left to states even though the vote may be national, or to local boards even though the vote may be state wide. So people deciding the same thing have different looking ballots, differentntly worded questions on them, different rules for when and how they can do their democratic duty, and so on. This leads to confusion and suspicion that "they over there" have an easier time to get their votes counted, or that "they over there" have an easier time bypassing the rules and tipping the scale by cheating.

All the remedies I have fly in the face of a central American principle though, that of decentralization. If you want national democracy, you need national standards for it. And that means top-down regulating and stepping on a lot of local toes. Not sure it can be done.
