Help with British dialect, please?

My Father did attend church on a very regular basis.
But then, he was a war-time crew survivor. . . .
Funnily enough, both of my grandfathers were also 'survivors'. One survived the Battle of Jutland; the other survived Gallipoli (where he fought as a dismount) and several other major battles as a cavalryman. I am proud to have known both of them.

Families are a little strange. I had two grandmothers and four great-grandmothers, just like everyone else, but I only remember my paternal lineage, my great-grandmother, I never met the others. I only know about her, whom I met, I was only ever curious about her.
