Have you scheduled your next blood donation?

[Edit: I die a little inside every time I see an update to this thread because I can't fix the typo in the thread name LOL]

Just got back from donating.

Such a simple way to give with such a big impact. And it literally costs you nothing, other than some minor inconvenience.

In fact, you can often get perks like online gift cards.

Don't keep putting it off, make an appointment.

I will no longer donate blood as long as there is a possibility a Republican can be the recipient. Sounds harsh...but they don't give a flying fuck about anyone else...why should I care about them? If someone i care about needs blood...I am A positive.

That kind of thinking falls right in line with blacks circa 1940s and gay men circa now. Maybe Hitler was onto something- blood purity. Heil dribble! :)

No. I'm far too old with compromised health.

My veins where they used to take blood from me are scarred which gives a few problems for blood tests - but it was worth it.

I assume my blood is poor quality, since my health is poor. Next doctor visit I could ask what is my type.

do they tell you? when i donated plasma they fucking refused to. well, with one exception, but before that they basically told me to fuck off.

My local blood bank won’t take my donations because of my recent cancer history.

Prior to that, I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve given blood. Twenty six years in the EMS/Fire service illustrated the need.

Give if you can…

When you donate blood, normally yes.

Donating Plasma is a very different thing, so they probably don't even test for Type.

If I understand correctly, with Plasma they spin out all the actual red blood cells and it's just the remaining fluid, so blood type is not important.

no, they do an ABO test. plasma has a type just like red blood does (mine is O). there's no rh factor to consider with plasma, however.

Great reminder. Thank you for your donation!

I was quite put out that they wouldn't accept mine, especially as I'm O- and they told me initially my blood would go the the prem baby unit

It's so fucking awkward here.

Used to be you'd be out shopping, notice a blood drive was on in the town hall, and if you're feeling ok that day you drop in.

Now? I get an email saying blood is urgently needed, i go to the website, i put in my details, and they tell me that the next available appointment is three towns over in four months time. It's been this way for a few years now, and it’s enough to deter me.

Decades ago I had to have extensive tests before they would take my blood even though I am a fairly rare type.

I had been to North Africa, The Arabian Peninsula, Sri Lanka, and Singapore so they thought I might have traces of tropical diseases.

Later on, I was admitted to an isolation hospital with stomach bleeding. They suspected some rare disease. It wasn't. It was a small stomach ulcer from stress and a bad diet, and cleared up in days on bland hospital food.

But, because I was a smoker and every room in the hospital had PPE protection, all the hospital staff, once I had been declared non-infectious, used to drop into my room for a cigarette break. My large ashtray was overflowing even though I emptied it every hour.

A consultant commented - that's the cause of the ulcer - too many cigarettes. I showed him that 90% of the cigarette butts had lipstick on them that I didn't use...

But while I was there, they took several pints of blood from me to treat a very ill patient with my blood type. She recovered but complained of being high on nocotine.

I used to donate as often as possible but I haven't in years. I'm O-. I needed a couple of units once which I got from my father but the fact that they were ready to give it to me if needed, I felt obligated to return the favor.

I don't schedule.
I do spur-of-the-moment
when the call goes out due to shortage.

:)

I’m a routine donor as well. Yesterday’s donation was #101.

To the regular donors, I have a question. I’m now 68 and for the past few donations, I’ve notice the following day I’m wiped out. Any others have similar feelings?

O positive. I've been donating since 18, and for the last few years I've been donating platelets.

I have haemochromatosis. I donate blood every 1st of the month by necessity, and also the day before any plane trip taking more than 4 hours (to prevent deep vein thrombosis). I have donated quite a few gallons of blood in my lifetime.
