REDWAVE said:Interesting, Don. Just as ppman has a blind spot when it comes to British imperialism, you have a blind spot regarding Australian chauvinism and racism. The original inhabitants are, of course, the Aboriginees, who have been brutally dispossed of their land, and viciously oppressed, by the European settlers. Did your ancestors comply with the Aborginees' laws on immigration when coming to Australia? Or are you in fact the descendent of illegal immigrants?
As a predominately Caucasian nation not far from Asia, Australia has long had a fear of being overwhelmed by the "yellow peril." The fear is that if immigration is opened to Asians, the Caucasians will soon be overwhelmed by a floodtide, and Asians will become the majority.
Anti-immigrant bias is a major problem worldwide, however, not just in Australia. The U.S.'s militarization of its border with Mexico, which has caused numerous unnecessary deaths, is notorious. The Berlin Wall came down, but the "Tijuana Wall" is still up. Similarily, the European Union is turning itself into a racist "Fortress Europa." As a revolutionary socialist, I support the right of all people to live where they please, unrestricted by the artificial borders of nation-states. By contrast, the current unjust, racist system is building huge barriers against the mobility of people, while simultaneously removing all barriers to the mobility of international finance capital.

Mate, you can get me to ride along with you for a time, but you always have to be such a peckerhead about the States, even when you're addressing a completely unrelated issue.
Here, from http://www.avagara.com/e_c/ec_why.htm :
The Electoral College is an expression of the Federal system. Ultimately, the states elect the President of the United States. The highest popularly elected official in the United States is the state governor, not the president. Any change toward a popular voting system undermines the states, and the very basis for the Federal system.
Okay already?
