I have always thought that a smile is one of the best (meaningful) gifts you can give to a complete stranger. I always like being smiled at.

I agree that a smile will go a long way, but I like to take things a step further. Say Hi to them. Ask them sincerely, how they are doing. Find out their name. Get to know them. Takes about 10 seconds of your time. Makes them feel better, you feel better. Everything.
