'Gay' vs 'really gay'?

As a liberal straight male, I am by nature all for people putting anything they want into any other consenting adult, so long as it is in private. On the other hand, I find myself offended by a certain segemnt of the gay population. You know the ones I mean. The 'really gay' men. The swishy, effeninate types, who play into the whole gay stereotype. Grrrr...

Can't the rest of you shut those guys up?!?

If you can shut the macho rednecks or any other segment of society up, sure.

Who says I can't have more than one iron in the fire at once? Macho rednecks, 'thug' hip-hop fans, prissy little southern 'belles'...hate them all!

So, are you also only supportive of the rights of black people as long as they aren't too dark?

That's not quite the right analogy. It'd be more accurate to say "I support the rights of all black people; but the ones who keep speaking ebonics loudly on the M60 at rush-hour are annoying as fuck."

Am with Johnny on this as usual; although it's obviously a bit of a troll-grenade to go fishing in this pond with.

My analogy is absolutely on the mark. Some gay men are as naturally effeminate as some black people are naturally dark.

Why should gay people allow straight people to set guidelines for our behavior or demeanor?

Will have to beg to differ on the first part; my man. SKin tone is genetically determined; as we can all agree, I am sure. To say that any social behavior is "natural" to the same degree is leaving yourself wide open for all kinds of dangerous conclusions.

Why should straight people allow gay people to set guidelines for what is and isn't annoying to them?

For some men, effeminate traits are genetically determined as well.

Straight people can be as annoyed as they wish to be. It diminished the discussion to wave that silly "gays picking on straights" flag.

Why does this question completely rub me the wrong way? Don't get me wrong, Johnny, I realize that you probably didn't mean any harm by it. But c'mon... are you serious?

As a heterosexual little white girl, sheltered, and from a family that doesn't believe in gay rights, I realize the ignorance in this question more than you apparently do.

I don't mean to get offensive about it, ( And I realize that I probably don't have as much a right to get that way as some people here) but I am completely with Queersetti on this. It's cool that you think people should be able to put "anything they want into any other consenting adult", but don't you find it a little condescending to say "On the other hand, [I get offended by really gay men]"?

Do you get just as upset with the heterosexual males who drool over girls, check them out, and wear, for the most part, "stereo typical" jock clothes? Or what about classy males and females holding hands in the mall? A gentleman tucking a free strand of hair behind his lady love's ear?

In my humble opinion, if you think that -all- people should keep these sort of things in private, that's completely fine. You have a right to your own opinion. And even if this little rule of yours only applies to the "really" gay men, that's cool too. But, I guess, whether you want the advice or not, I'm going suggest you seriously think over what you wrote, and if you still find no fault in it, don't expect a "You're right! Those realllllllly gay guys should just go back into the closet" from any of the "normal" gay men here.

Okay. I'm done.

"Effeminate traits"? Like what? I can see that some basic body wirings, hormone levels and what-have-you would be genetic; but it seems to me that to allow any complex of behavior such as that which is seen, in this society at this time, as "effeminacy" would be to walk the plank.

There's a theory that rape is an evolved behavior. Do you see where I am going with this?

I don't feel "picked on" by gays, but they are a major part of the scenery here, especially in my circles. When I am around Jack-from-WillandGrace-types- which happens considerably more often than I'd like here in NYC-I just shut up and bite the inside of my mouth, like any civilized person. It's nice to kvetch here on the internet, though.

No, I don't. I have no idea what rape has to do with it, nor do I understand why you deny that there is any biological component to the development of personality traits.

Now 'Setti, tho I adore you, here we must part ways a tad. It's not just straight people who get annoyed. Several of my gay friends are annoyed too when they get tarred with the same slang-brush when they don't act the same way.

"Because I'm gay they automatically assume I prance."
"They said I can't be gay, I'm too straight acting..."
"I'm straight, but because of the way I act everything things I'm gay"

Yes, there are straight swishers, it's true. And they are hit on by gays who think they just haven't come out yet, and ignored by straights who assume they are gay. Lucky for them, the a lot of girls seem to like it.

*This, because we were posting at the same time, may seem I am going to the rape issue, which I am not. But to a statement earier.

Every thing you said in your post is absolutely true, but does not speak to the issue, which is the attitude that some straights have that gays ought to not behave in ways that "annoy" them.

I do not believe we are, nor should be, under any such obligation.

Why should I, as a fairly "straight acting" gay man, urge or cajole my gay brothers to change their behavior in order to appease straights?

You shouldn't.

And I would never ask you to.

Any more than I would ask one of my friends not to swish so much.

In fact, if you want to know the truth, I hate the term "straight acting". What is that sapossed to mean anyway?

I know many more straight Assholes than I do gay ones. Just look at the GB! (don't tell them I said that  )

I could digress into a simlar convo I had recently, but I won't get off topic.

You and your gay fellows can do anything you like. Johnny and I just happen to find some of it highly irritating and are taking advantage of the internet opportunity to complain to the gay community.

Yes, let's hear it for those robust, manly gays, Johnny.

"You can ride my tail anytime, Iceman", or whatever.

Yeah, I'm not talking about taking away gay rights, or making people conform, necessarily...ok, yeah, I think everyone should stop pissing me off, is that so much to ask?!?

Nope. Tough shit mate.

Reminds me of that anti-racism movie Bill Crosby made a long time ago "don't wanna kill 'em or nothing', just put 'em off somewhere where they don't bother anybody."

By the end of the movie he'd segrated everyone.
