I just read an article about Paul McCartney, and was again struck by the constant and forever placement of the two words "Former Beatle" prefixed to his name for, apparently, all eternity. Is it really neccesary? How many people would be confused if they dropped the FB and would say, "Paul who?" "You know, Paul McCartney. The former Beatle?" "Oh him!"

I think it's fair to always put "The Self-Proclaimed King of Pop" in front of Michael Jackson's name -- he asked for it, after all.

But who else always gets such saddled with such exposition? Should we forever put "Dresses like a Whore" in front of Mariah Carey? "Formerly Straight, Then Gay, Then Straight, And Now Gay Again Elton John?"

Okay, one more paragraph should make this an official rant. The only other people we do this to (that I can think of) are TV stars who were never able to shed their images -- like "Happy Days' Henry "Fonzie" Winkler".

A prefix is something that you're most remembered for and will be stuck with forever. What's your prefix?

but the one that takes the cake has got to be ...

The Artist Formerly Known as Prince .... :)

Or "Rapper". You can't mention a rapper without actually putting the word "Rapper" in front of his name. "Rapper DMC". "Rapper MC Hammer".
