First Ever Crime and Punishment Story Event - Official Support Thread

Congratulations on the early 'terminations' of your stories! Mine is currently with a Lit editor, so it still needs to be terminated. Yep, death is in there since it is Crime and Punishment-themed. She even skinned a few people - not the graphics - but as a warning to others by a femme fatale as she works her way through gritty actions.

Hurry up, you guys/girls/ladies/writers! Finish, finish, type, proof, finish, ... post!

Right, getting there. 15k words and the big scene has finally started.

It's set in the Westminster legislative system, hopefully neutral enough that it won't be busted for politics. Would anyone (ideally from outside the UK, but tbh it's quite niche even for Brits) be interested in reading the first section to see if it's comprehensible?

For example, 'secondary legislation', 'an Order' and 'Regulations' are essentially the same thing, but I've tried not to casually use them as synonyms, as most readers won't know that.

I could really do with a few more weeks...

Hey guys, we've got until September 18th, probably September 15th to be safe. So keep plugging away!

I have my first chapter just about done. It's 'Police procedural' data-driven. Chapter 2 will focus on driving to the solution and busting the perp (or perps, as the case may be).

I've submitted my story for Crime and Punishment, When the Shooting Stops. In the aftermath of a mass shooting, a married woman is videoed kissing the hero that stopped the gunman, but that hero is not her husband. A marriage that husband and wife had hoped to mend becomes increasingly imperiled as the internet does what the internet does.

18,000 words so far, probably another 3k to go, then quite a lot of editing needed. I need to finally pick present or past tense, for starters. And resist the temptation to tell the story of what happens when two characters have to step into a side room...

I'll try to submit by the end of next week, in case there's certain sentences Laurel doesn't want.

I need to pick a title and description, too. Currently leaning towards "Image Nine Point Four" and "Government wants to ban kinky porn. She goes to court."

I have three paragraphs. I'm just zooming through this one, NOT! :(

That's more than what I've got, which is a very rough idea! 😂

I might just pants this one out, I haven't even gotten the plot outlined beyond the initial contempt... which has promise, but man, my real world drama has set me so far behind schedule with Events and Contests. This is gonna be interesting.

Oh, family issues have overridden everything since Mum got sick. I'm so happy she is better, but everyone is still quite concerned. I find myself phoning her ten times a day. Wait, is that a line from a song?

Totally understandable there, real world always takes priority to writing. 🫂

I'm working on a different story seat of my pants, and it has moved a bit. I may still use some from the other story and make it fit.

Hey there. A question: Can an entry into this challenge titled as a Chapter One in a series or titled only as a complete story. I've started my entry and as I've got into it I've realized I want to build on it in the future. Sadly if I do that now it maybe ready for the 2024 event. This story (Ch 1 or whatever) will be a complete story not requiring another chapter, but if it does not offend I'd like to title it Ch 1. I thought I read a thread here about series stories, started to go through input's then went off on a tangent. I'll come back, look at comments and as its unlikely I'll be finished before the 18th and only concerns the title I'll do it then. Thanks. Stay safe. Ow.

I’m going to have (at least) two chapters submitted for the challenge, just as I had two chapters submitted for the Spillane challenge. Also, my story for this challenge, “Mystery at Mystery Lake” is part of my overall Iron Crowbar series. So if you want Chapter 1 to be for the challenge, appropriately marked and tagged, then the rest of the story to come later, then you do you.

You know, you don't have to title the first part of a series Chapter One. When I wrote The Adventures of Ranger Ramona, I hadn't really intended to write a sequel. But when I did, and titled it as Chapter Two, Laurel retroactively added Chapter One to the title of the first part.

There appears to be no Crime And Punishment story listing off the main page... that might be having an effect on traffic, since readership and votership is MUCH lighter than normal on my stories.

That's because submissions are supposed to START today. I don't understand why so many people have been jumping the gun.
