First Ever Crime and Punishment Story Event - Official Support Thread

That's because submissions are supposed to START today. I don't understand why so many people have been jumping the gun.

Well, one would assume that as soon as the site publishes stories as part of an event, the site would have the event site ready to go. I wouldn't worry about it if it weren't for the fact this isn't anywhere near the first time this sort of thing has happened.

Did you mark it as part of the event? You see, the stories aren't even scheduled for publication yet.

I would not assume that. It's an event, it's meant to occur at a specific time. It defeats the whole purpose of being an event if stories can be listed for it just whenever.

Indeed I did.

Then one wonders why the site posted them early, despite the Note To Admin... I'm not the only one, either.

Hey Girls /Guys, This is what the organizer of the event said in his initial invitation:

Stories are to be submitted between September 1, 2023 and September 18, 2023, with a posting date of September 25, 2023.

So is it possible some miscommunication between parties may have occurred?

The thing is, yes, the thing, well, the thing is that it's a goof.

Here's what I think is going on:

That posting date of September 25th is when the LIST of the stories will go up.

In the Spillane challenge this year, for some reasons the stories weren't published until that posting date, the same day the list went up. However, in the previous two Spillane challenges, the stories were published when they were approved and the list was published on the posting date... just like this Crime and Punishment challenge is being treated.

I don't know why they did it one way for the Spillane challenge last month and another way for this challenge. I just wish they'd be consistent about it.

Uh huh. Meaning, the site's telling us the stories will post on the 25th, no? And then they got posted on the 1st.

I'm not complaining, per se, except that I expected my stories to be listed under a Crime and Punishment banner, which affected my choice of title and description. I suppose it doesn't matter all that much, since whenever the C&P page does appear, it'll refer interested people to my stories anyway. But we all know how important a story's early launch/reception can be, so by the time the site channels C&P readers my way, the stories will already be more than three weeks "established" on the site, with stats that might affect whether they choose to read them.

It's more than slightly inconsistent, sadly. I like the stories, but I think I'd have titled them differently if I understood they'd be posted with all the other New stories last night. Ah well.

WifeWatchman and Voboy, I agree with the points you've both made. I've only done one other event like this a ways back, the 'One night in' challenge and it was why I wanted 'in' with this event: The broad scope of stories under the same title AND being able to read them all in that time frame. I think I took more from the variation of stories I read than the actual entering the event.

How is it different if just "some" of the stories weren't posted until the last day?

Hi Guys,

Just a quickie [question that is] am I reading the 'rules' correctly? That all entries are submitted before the 18th of September and will then be posted on the 25th. What will happen to those entries that the moderator considers do not meet the Lit guidelines, some of my stories in the past have had to be 'watered down' to fit said criteria.

You can go ahead and upload your story already. In fact, several of us have already had our stories published. That way, if there's anything you need to fix, you'd hopefully have the time to do so before the deadline and everything will work out smoothly. So send it in as soon as you're finished with your story, I'd say. And good luck!

Thank you, I have just been advised that my story has been published. Reading the others here I think it is no big deal that it is available via my page.

Hope not.

Apparently the stories themselves are being published immediately upon approval.

I don't know for sure what will happen to a story that is rejected and not resubmitted by the 18th.

I've reworked a story I've published elsewhere for the event. I'm asking my editor to go through it, and then I'm posting for this one the contest. It's called Vengence is Mine. I may still try to finish my stalled story for the event as well.

Okay, well, I've submitted it. Ran into a rocky moment, as murder isn't a tag word you can use. Vengeance is Mine, hopefully, we'll be allowed even though it has murder in it.

Will works submitted but not published by the deadline still count? Back in August, around 3/4 of my published stories were wrongly sent back. I resubmitted them with a note to the admin. Two plus weeks later, not one of them has been republished. I missed the AI Era contest because of this, despite submitting my entry around August 15th.

My reading of the exercise announcement is that none of them will be published until 25 September (but it also might be that they won't be scanned for acceptance until near then either).

I do agree that it sounds that way. However, many of the stories submitted have already been posted, including my own. And Laurel (or whoever approved it) even edited the text at the start to include a link to the official event, so it was clearly known that it was a part of this challenge. I think they're all getting posted as soon as they get the green light this time around.

Ah, so. I submitted one two days ago (and am reviewing another one now). I'll see if they get published before the 25th.
