Being an engineer by training and trade my first inclination was to try to 'fix' things, still do to an extent. Of course that only got me deeper in the shit.

Now I try to go a different route. No matter what it is I'll say something like, "Do you want to tell me about it?" And then listen patiently while interjecting appropriate questions from time to time. It seems to work, most of the time anyway. They feel better and I try to not tie up to many brain cells remembering the details of all sorts of stuff that is mostly transient and irrelevant.

What works for me is: Paying attention to what a woman says, asking questions if I'm confused or don't get what she means, and feeling interested in her presentation. I believe women respond to genuine-ness. Anything else is a discount of her. And I never award her a plastic fuzzy baloney trophy.
