I’m not the only one who has trouble with story titles. I think we should therefore give prizes for the best and worst titles for the earth day stories.

A good title should entice you in, tell you something of what the story’s about, but still be interesting or vague enough to make you want to read it. A random handful of good titles would include (and this is a tentative list):

“Hedgehog Feud” (cute, just like the story); “Oceans Deep” (mysterious and attractive); “Child of the Dark” (a bit trite, but still seductive); “Hawk and a Dove” (very mythic); “Uganda Goddess” (Anywhere but Uganda and this wouldn’t have qualified. Something wild and dangerous about Uganda); “Hunting Dawn” (ambiguous and sinister), “Rhubarb and Horseshit” (Title better than story?), “Hide in the Sun” (a very attractive paradox); “Ancient Liberties” (sounds like a comfortably interesting and meaty tale); and “Mythical Encounter by the Stream” (if it nad been “…A Stream” it wouldn’t have worked)

Bad titles are the ones that are trite, cliched, dull, or tell you too much about the story.

Worst: “Pond Clearing” (ugh! makes you think of mucking around in sludge. Of course, maybe some people are into that), “Earth Day Field Trip” (Gee, I wonder what that’s about?), “Surprise at Summer Camp” (same), “The Happy Camper” (there are two stories with that title), “Backpack in Mother Nature’s Crack” (just a terible title. It was so bad it made me read the story, which was quite good); and “Earth Loving Mother Earns Orgasm” (reminds me of “Every Good Boy Does Fine”. Another bad title for a good story.)

Well, it that case you probably haven't read and/or voted on either of my stories. So would ya, please, pretty please, pretty please with whip cream on top and maybe one of these?

I'm now at exactly 25 votes for each story. But that's only because sirhugs voted for 'em both today and he thinks he voted for one earlier but he can't remember for sure or for which. So one of 'em may still be one vote short after Laurel does her nightly electronic voo-doo.

And speaking of sirhugs, I believe he and Alex de Kok, another damn fine writer, are both a few votes short of a full load. I'm sure they'd appreciate your kind consideration.

I have read every story posted to the contest, and I voted for the ones I liked. There was one that should have a one and deserved it, I won't mention the title. I didn't bother to vote.

Bluntly, some are difficult to read, at least I couldn't keep enough concentration up to finish them, but most are enjoyable and interesting.

Different minds come up with different ideas, and appeal to those with like minds.

I will just go back to my wall now, it is where I seem to always belong. At least it makes me feel safe.

Life is good. Lee said "Sure." What's more, both my ED stories (that's Earth Day not Erectile Dysfunction) now have 28 votes. That means they've qualified, though at the last minute and just barely.

Still, what more could one old beat-up Boomer want?

He mentioned three of mine - two as good; one as bad; and one not mentioned.

Inconsistent - that's me. Whether the titles are as good as the stories or vice versa?

Do the titles come first? or the story?

For me some titles are there from the first draft - Hedgehog Feud was one. Some never get a title that I am happy with. (That was the unmentioned one)

If the plot starts with the title I find that the plot tends to stay on track. If I can't think of a good title the story wanders as well.

Do others find that a title that springs to mind instantly helps the writing?

It's the difference between "A Day in the Park" and "That Day in the Park". Which would you rather read?

Calling it a 'mythological encounter by a stream' puts the whole thing in some nebulous never-never-land. Calling it a 'mythological encounter by the stream' implies that you know this particular stream: it's real, it exists, and that brings the mythological encounter into the realm of the real and everyday.
