Earth Day Contest Support Thread

Thanks for clearing that up dr.M. I guess it's just the way my mind works. I would have never said by "a" stream.

Though I did originally just call it "A Mythical Encounter." Good thing I changed it, lol.

<sigh> I guess I have procrastinated enough. I need to get my butt outside on the lawnmower.

He mentioned three of mine - two as good; one as bad; and one not mentioned.

Inconsistent - that's me. Whether the titles are as good as the stories or vice versa?

Do the titles come first? or the story?

Your stories reach out and grab me, and I enjoy them. I have even been to your full listings. I think your titles are fine.

I remember Ted telling me about titles. I always tried to listen carefully and understand what he had to say. I try and often I don't get it right, I think I agonize more over that part than the text.

Ted told me that a title to a story, or a movie, or even an item to sell was like the bait that caught a fish.

It has to do most of the attracting, you see. I think that in this respect, the Dr. is correct and shows skill and thought on the subject.

Ted told me once, just two simple lines that have been with me ever since.

They are:

When asked, he said, "I shot that man..."

Or:

When asked, he said, "I shot that man in self-defense."

Both lines are true, you see. Each gives the reader an entirely different impression of the incident, just two words left out. I see this in newspaper reporting, regularly.

Words have magic, in the reading we can feel emotions as deeply as the writer. This is something I did not learn in College, my instructors never instilled that in me. Perhaps my goals at the time were more towards other ends.

Ted loved to put words on paper, he loved to spin a yarn. He practiced on me when we went on trips, telling me long winded stories about everything from road signs to towns we passed. He made me laugh so hard I sometimes would wet myself, much to his delight.

Slowly, I am beginning to understand. I am beginning to love it too. I want to be accepted as a storyteller.

The beauty is it really is a learned trait, so I have a chance to one day be as good at it as he was.

If I may, my thanks to Rumple, one special man who took the time to critique my efforts. Appreciated.

Lee,

You're welcome. It was a "feel good" for me and kind of a partial repayment. There's no telling how many folks have helped me over the years. And that includes my writing, although my work doesn't give due credit to their efforts. :)

The discussion on titles has been interesting, and probably merits a thread of its own - or has there already been one? It's easy to tell my early stuff. It tends to be a character name, like 'Kate', or 'Meg'.

Of my Earth Day stories, 'Hide in the Sun' appealed to me because of the apparent paradox, yet it is simply - and literally - a description of the location of the story.

Recently I have begun to try to find a title from within the story. My other Earth Day story, 'The Gathering Shadows' comes into that group, as do others of mine, for example 'Tell me I can hope' and 'Okay, baby, we'll do it'. Others, perhaps weaker, are simply descriptive, 'A date for the Prom' (only 20 more votes to hit the magic 1000!), 'Kowalski gets her man', etc.

I doubt if I can or will ever come up with the ideal titling methodology, but I find that discovering the title within the words of the story is probably my favourite.

I just checked my scores, and I'm comfortably over 25 for each, so thank you for those last few, good people. I think I'm destined for mid-table again. I'll be in some good company.

Voting closes sometime today, Sunday 18th, and Laurel posts the result tomorrow, Monday 19th.

It's been fun. Again.

Alex

Congratulations!

To CrimsonMaiden, pixiesjuice and Elizabetht, the top three in the contest. Somewhere amongst the also-rans again for me, but I'm in good company.

Never mind, now where are those ideas for this year's National Nude Day contest...

Alex

Yes!! I love it! The AH ladies have taken it away.

Great show Crim, pixiesjuice, Liz. :D

A clean sweep for AH womankind.

Congratulations to CrimsonMaiden, pixiesjuice and Elizabetht.

Great job ladies!! I'm proud of you! I am very happy with my final score, 4.73 with 51 votes.:D

Can't stop smiling here :) . I have to say thanks to Laurel for the great contest :rose: and Hisemerald who I found through the volunteer editor program; even although her daughter was sick she still found the time to help me out. :rose:

Congrats Crimson & Elizabetht :rose: :rose:

and  's for those that read, voted or sent feedback, all were appreciated.

:rose:

Congrats

To every one for making this a great contest and especially you three winners. Write on!

Um wow...

Congrats to Crim and pixie, you both had excellent stories. I couldn't have lost to two finer ladies (stick dampy up there with the other two and it woulda been a perfect trio :) )

I would like to thank those that voted, those that trolled, those that read it and those that sent me feedback and pcs that made me feel better just by reading them.

I will see all of you next contest.

PS.... do I get alittle 'W' now or does that only apply to Crim?

Brilliant!

Well done to the winners.

I hope you feel that the torment of waiting was worth it. The winners won in a hard fought contest and should be proud of their achievement.

:nana: :nana: :nana:

One for each of them.

Now the fight starts to work out the last place. I think I lost out at both ends of the contest. My scores as of now are:

Ancient Liberties:
Rating 4.48 Votes 29 Views 2705

Energy Saving:
Rating 4.21 Votes 34 Views 7481

Hedgehog Feud:
Rating 4.71 Votes 28 Views 5857

and me as Jeanne_d_artois
Pond Clearing:
Rating 4.43 Votes 72 Views 12297

It seem that more people are prepared to read and vote if I'm NOT me.

Oh well, there is always the next contest. Perhaps I should write a 'How To' as my entry for that or maybe a foreign language story in a language I've invented. That should win 'nul points' and come last.

Og

Oh WOW,

Can you say shocked and surprised? Thanks for all the congrats!

Congrats to pixie and Elizabeth! WTG ladies! I read both of your stories, and they were fantastic!

Thanks to everyone who voted and left feedback. You rock!

Elizabeth, I am not sure about the W. I would think all of us would get one.

Does that mean what I think it means?

I never had a chance. Was doomed to mediocre since the beginning... that's what you get for writing a story which is like so many others out there... *sigh* Being in this contest was worth it though. Had fun and the top three were ones I really loved. :)

Congratulations you three. That's fantastic! Nice work and lots of great stories churned up here.

What can I tell you, Og? That makes sense to me. :) Maybe I should try the same thing next time. For once again, I too have finished twix and tween.

"Handling Things In Central Park" in Romance, barely qualifed. Four votes were taken away in the last computation. That boosted the final score by .02 but left the story with the bare minimum of 25 votes, along with 5829 views, and a score of 4.68.

"Towering Passion" in First Time, finished up with 27 votes, 3004 views and a score of 4.52.

Congratulations again to all the winners who so capably upheld the honor of the old AH.

Go girls go!

Congratulations--CrimsonMaiden, pixiesjuice, and Lizzy the Lizard Licker!

I thought all three stories were excellent and deserving, unlike in some other contests.

I still can't believe I didn't win the contest and even lost the side bet. But at least I'm making a lot of money from phone sex.

Fuck the TROLLop.

Congradulations Ladies~

CONGRADULATIONS

BRAVO...BRAVO...BRAVO

Way to go Crim~....Elizabetht~...& Pixie~

"Excellent Tails"...

oopps ...I meant exellent tales~

congrads ladies...bows humble~

final note: I feel as though I have won...
just from being in the company of such
remarkable writers...as I said before to
me it wasn't a contest but a coalition and
gathering of great minds and pen-menship...
(or is that puter ship?)...lol

For a day to celebrate EARTH~

P.S. So where do we hang out now...lmao

Crim, Pixie and Elizabeth eh? Who would have thought. Well me for one. Congratulations ladies. Very well deserved. Enjoy the glory (and the money).

I'm throwing a confident hat into the ring here for the 'Pillar Award' (supporting all contenders from the bottom. Plus it's a pun too!)
with 45.5K clicks and 80 votes for a grand average of 3.71.

Joseki?

Sorry Gauche

As of this morning Piggy Tails was 3.16 with 21 votes with 5818 views and 6 comments including a Yuck!

Yesterday it was considerably higher with 25 votes. Gotta love those trolls.

Og I'm not sure how this works with your formula.

Thanks -- Jo
