DVD Question!

I hope someone can help me. I have a friend who lives in Germany and she sent me a DVD. I have a playstation 2 that I use as my DVD player and the first DVD worked fine. However, for my birthday she sent me two more and for some reason they won't work. The screen simply displays the words TV system doesn't match. Why is this happening and is there anything I can do to fix it?

Thanks!

DVDs are coded by region. See your PS2 owners manual and you'll see what regions can be played on it. 1 and All I think are the norm, I dunno, not looking at my DVD manual.

Have your friend send a German DVD player over. Or make sure your friend sends DVDs that fit your region.

If you don't have a player that will play DVD's formatted to the code of where they were obtained, then they won't read. The first disk might have been openly formatted for all areas, and the others are not.

Some DVD players will play all of the worlds codes, but not all players will. I don't know what the format for your playstation 2 is.

If it says in your manual that you can only play area '1' (U.S.) disks then you are probably not able to veiw them for the above reason.

I hope this helps.

Green is my favorite color. That ass isn't lettuce, I know, but it looks crisp and tasty. A little dressing and I'd just munch-a-munch-a.

A lot of it depends on where the player was sold. I checked my DVD player's manual. In the US it's regions "1" and "all."

If the DVDs aren't coded that way, then you ain't watching them. Something about international copyright laws.

Thanks so far. Is there a DVD player that will play all DVDs that I can buy in the US? And would the fact that I have a projection TV be the cause?

Projection TV has no bearing. Check the cases the DVDs came in. On the back, in tiny print, you will find either a "1" or a "2". This is the region coding. The Americas are region 1. Europe is region 2. Region 2 DVDs will not play on region 1 players.

You can search the net for a "region free" DVD player, but they don't work all that well sometimes. Best bet is to have your friend stop sending you DVDs.

It also might have something to do with the fact that Europe uses the PAL broadcasting scheme, and the states use NTSC. Unless you have a multi-system TV, it won't work.

Welcome to what I deal with everyday. :)

It won't help you get a picture on your big screen TV, but the DVD drive I just installed appears to have the capability to read any reegion's disks.

I haven't encountered any disks other than region 1 or All, so I can't say for sure that I can change it after the initial installation for region 1. It definitely can be installed for any region though.
