My lab is licking his nose/chops incessantly.

He has done this one other time and I was worried that he was bloating, but he wasn't; apparently he just had mouth irritation.

He's doing it again and seems uncomfortable. He's not showing any signs of anything more serious, but what can I do???

The poor guy, has anyone dealt with this before?

I'm thinking it might be salt from the snow....??

Suggestions, please.

Well what did you do for him last time??? Only thing I can think of would to be sure he always has fresh water in his bowl. Take him to the vet...or call and ask.

Brat

Don't know

If my dog can reach it she licks it. The salt sounds good though.

I was thinking it might be an irritation to the salt for snow too!

Is his nose very dry? My dog used to react to changes in weather, and at a time had almost scales on her nose. I would try and sneak on some cream (but of course, she licked that off too!). Poor doggie. Maybe you should phone a vet; there might be something over-the-counter that would help him.

he's almost eight...i'm familiar with his habits. he's a licker, but i know the difference.

last time i took him to the vet to check for bloating and eventually (hours) the licking ceased.

clearly what i'm going to do is wait, but i was wondering if anyone knew of any remedies for his irritation???

he may have the doggie version of chapped lips. it affects thier little noses or he may have gotten into salt like you think. I'd call your vet to be on the safe side. A phone call can't hurt. It's probably just temporary.

thanks...i did just call the vet, she said there's nothing i can really do but take precaution next time. his nose is nice and wet and doesn't look any different so i don't think it's chapped.

he seems to be close to dozing off, which is nice.

thanks everyone for responding!

and welcome....shaved? squirter? watcha wanna be called hon?

My sister is here, she's a tech for a vet and an animal lover.

he doesn't seem to be, though i know that's a symptom of something bad, isn't it?

Not necessarily

She suggested maybe a tooth is bothering him, or that it could be nothing.

Have the vet check his teeth the next time you go, or if he keeps on licking.

As long as he's not vomiting and he's eating okies, then don't worry about it.

Thanks to you and your sister, spectral.

Wash his muzzle with warm water and mild soap. Rinse well and do it again. Then dry it as much as you can. This will deminish any residual irritants such as salts, which is probably what the problem is.

will do. thank ya.

As long as his nose is moist / wet and his eyes are not running then he should be fine. Is he overheating at all? That sometimes causes such an action.

nah, lil guy's actually sleeping now and i've been in touch with my vet. i'm definitely on the overly cautious side when it comes to my dog but even i think he's fine now.

thanks!

Keep an eye out for any nausea. My vet said that there's a doggie flu going around a lot. If he throws up, see the vet.
Peace, little lab!

Okay, first you need to identify what type of lab and his/her name!

I have a Black Lab named Tuco.

He occassionally has fits like you've described except he drools non-stop also. Never does it by the time he gets to the vet. It's usually something that lasts overnight and then he's fine. It doesn't usually help much but I alway swab him down with a wet paper towel just in case it's caused by contact with anything. However he has atrocious teeth and I'm willing to bet that's what it is. He eats snow constantly and has never had this reaction to it, but the stuff he eats is no where near the road salt.

My vet suggested once that I give him an antihistemine (sp?) like Benydrl. I tried it once and it didn't work, but it might for yours.
