Do you go with the flow of opinion or do you buck the system?

On Lit?

On your job? Personal life?

Do you take risks and do they pay off or not?

Tell me.

Well risk taking is very risky, you see. Usually when I take risks they turn out very, very bad. The result is risky risk taking becomes much more riskier. I try not to care what others think of me. Spent the first sixteen years trying to please everyone and the last four pissing everyone off.

Both.

I generally would not follow the crowd. Like my taste in music. I like the alternative.

All my life I take risks, and most of the time I learned through mistakes. I have no regrets. If you put me on a desert island, I'd say that I will survive better than most.

My kids too follow after me. They learned to be independent early in life and take risks. And they are happier and more confident than most other kids in this rat-eat-rat world.

The last time that 'what other people think' actually had any bearing or influence on my life was when I was about 22.

That insecurity inherent in youth is dreadful, albeit necessary in the circle of life, and I'm glad to see the back of it.

But it is necessary as we are flock animals and we seek approval, confirmation and respect. It's just that when you get older, you are able to get those things without following the other lemmings over the cliff.

in lit, no it doesnt matter what any one thinks. if people dont like you, they can click ignore, if they are too weak to click ignore, they can present their case before you and have you either laugh at them or think for some reason that they matter to you and give them the upper hand.

Love how you think, IR.

Good morning, JL

I buck when I need to. On Lit when something interests me enough or I'm in the mood for a good buck. In my job when it's in the best interest of my patient. In my personal life when it's in the best interest of me or my family. I have taken some risks and they are paying off.

Have a good day.:rose:

Yes, Juicy, I think it does matter to most of us what others think of us.

Most humans have an inherent desire for acceptance, we have an inherent desire to belong, to be liked, to be loved.

But wanting and needing those things doesn't mean we can't be individuals, it doesn't mean we can't have our own opinions.

Mostly, what matters is how we present those opinions, whether it be here on Lit, or to our significant others, or to our colleagues.

I  you.

btw - I just registered.:)

I've seen you buck. You do it well. Your posts are very thorough and thought provoking.

Hope your day goes well too.

I'm with Foxy. It does matter--I don't go out of my way to antagonize people. I want to be accepted and approved of. But I won't bend on something that's important to me, something that's mine. Where I work, my bosses are all pretty conservative, the business is conservative. I dress conservatively, as is appropriate for the office. But I wear my Labour Party pin in my lapel, and when people ask what it is, I tell them. And even the, I care what they think. I want them to think "he's really not one of us, in spite of the way he dresses and acts."

I tend to say what I think if it will be at all helpful or if I have something to contribute.
I have my own opinion and I am not a sheep.

On Lit?

Where ever.

On your job? Personal life?

Do you take risks and do they pay off or not?

I very rarely take risks.
It's a lack of confidence in myself yet usually my gut instinct is right.

This thread prompted a poem. :)

I think it sounds cooler to say I buck the system. So I'm a gonna go with that one.
I'm a rebel!
People like rebels, right?

I go with my own center. If the "flow" goes along with my own thoughts/values then yeah, why not go along with it?

If something goes against my own moral code then Ill generally speak up. I think (hope?) most people respect and honest difference of opinion.

I'll take risks if I can justify them. I don't go out on limbs without a safety net of some sort though.

I have my own opinions about everything. Sometimes mis-informed, but mostly not. I don't state my opinion looking for approval or disapproval from others. I don't think anyone should.

does it matter??????

Yes.... i mean no

ummmmm........... What do you think?

For the most part, i go with the flow. Not so much with trends and stuff, as i really dont understand how people my age would spend 100 bucks on a pair of jeans from Abercombie...<shudder> but otherwise, theres really nothing that makes me stick out.

On lit, it matters to me if people like me, but if they dont, so be it...

At my job, i could care less, i mean, its a grocery store fer cryin out loud.

Personal life, yeah, it matters what people think of me...my friends, those i go to school with, kids i see at parties.

I dont often take risks, but i know that i always try to show my individuality (sp?) But as they say, in order to win, you gotta roll the dice, so when it comes down to it, i'll take a chance on something.

p.s. Hey JL! long time no see hun!

Risks:

On Lit... I have my own opinion and voice it.

Job wise, I always did my work and I don't think I could take risks where I was working ... no time to think about risks.

Personal life , Yes I do tend to go against the grain. I always want to push that limit and at times I am successful and other times I just fail ... but in order to succeed I must fail once or twice.....:)

The greatest risk I have taken is in my love life. I took a big risk and while many would be surprised by my actions ... I am happy I took that risk ..

It matters to me what other people think. Some people matter a whole lot more and others hardly matter at all, but the upshot is that it matters on some level. I want to be liked, who doesn't?

I take risks sometimes, but not very often and traditionally not very big ones. But I have been going through a profound transition in my life, and I beginning to learn not to hide my true self from people out of fear of rejection. That is a huge risk for someone like me. Here I am world, this is me. Like me or not it's your decision not mine. That's a pretty bold statement to make. But for me it is one that goes hand in hand with being able to be happy and true myself. Some people will like me, others won't. That's life.

I tend to go with the flow unless it really goes against what I believe in. It has taken a long time to get here, but I've reached the point where I don't really care what other people think. I just want to live my life the best way I know how - without stepping on too many toes along the way. I'm really a very easy-going person, but you just can't please all the people all of the time.

As for taking risks. . .yes, I have taken many in the past year and fortunately most of them paid off in the long run.
